Martin to Seek Shadow May 8

OCEAN CITY — Martin . Z. Mollusk, this resort's pomp-crazed Hermit Crab, will seek his shadow for the 11th consecutive year 11 a.m. Thursday, May 8, at the Moorlyn Terrace Beach. Should Martin see his shadow, summer comes a week early, according to the folklore of this family resort. Should he fail to cast an image, no big deal, summer arrives on time. During 10 previous tries, Martin has never failed, much to the delight of commercial interests in the l community. X A FIRM ADVOCATE of pomposity, the testy crusta- | cean insists that his en- | trance to the beach and the prognostication ceremonies maintain a high profile. The Ocean City High School Band will play something that sounds like

"Pomp and Circumstance''' to herald the crab's approach. This year, the shellfish will be escorted to the beach by the 55th Street Men's Club Pooper Seooper Brigade, a group that impressed onlookers at the city's recent Doo-Dah Parade. Baton Twirlers, cute little Hula Babies and other hangers-on from the South Jersey School of Baton and Dance will greet Martin on the sands. Just prior to his creep, an inexpensive rendition of MZM's theme song, "Some Enchanted Morning" (you may see a tree crab across a crowded beach) will be performed before the incredulous crowd. BORN ALONG the Zambesi River the crab, who was deserted by his parents at birth (for good

"reason) later moved to Tepid Swamp, La. , where he met his wife, Mollie, a former Miss Crustacean, the pair moved to Ocean City, where Martin impressed the chamber of commerce with his ability to predict weather and garner publicity. The Crab's colorful career is documented in an autobiography, "The Martin Z. Mollusk Story or Rhyme and Punishment", a long epic written in monotonous couplets. Copies are available from the gift shop of the Ocean City Historical Museum, 409 Wesley Ave., where they are gathering dust. For more information on Martin Z. Mollusk Day, contact the Big Crab, City Hall, Ocean City, N.J. 08226. phone 399-6111, Ext. 222.
