Our Readers Write Mayor Backs Council Vote To The Editor: In reply to one of our Ldwer Township councilman's statements on a'Green Acres grant-loan last Wednesday. I wish to point out the following: • We have not spent any free money or low interest funding (although I find two percent money offered to us by the state to bAvorth considering). • The vote taken at Monday night's Township Meeting showed strong support on behalf of those council persons who approved, in concept, the idea of the township acquiring this parcel of ground so that the major portion" of this site can be saved from development I assume that when Councilman Robert F. Conroy voted against this multi-recreational site he realized that between 1.500 and 2.000 dwelling units could be erected at this location We cannot expect the present owners (Dresser Industries) to sit bfick and allow us free use of their property forever (they own the beach front as well as the open areas surrounding this site). ONE OF THE GREATEST tourist attractions in all o( Cape May County is the drive down to the end of Sunset Boulevard Please realize we (the public) do not. and I repeat, do not have any public access or public parking at this location. The street is 40' wide, not even wide enough for a proper turn around, let alone parking for the many hundreds of cars visiting this site. As we are discussing the access problems. possibly a parking fee may be one of the answers to off setting the costs involved. As far as costs to the taxpayers of Lower Township, user fees are to be charged to all non residents of the township utilizing any of the proposed facilities that may be erected on the site. May I stress again, township residents will not have to pay for use of the facilities, only non residents. This is within the guidelines of the Green Acres Grant With this in mind. I must stress Qiese fees must and w ill exceed the costs of this project. Conroy states that free money is expensive. Within the past 14 months weY«as a council and myself as mayor, have supported the acceptance of three federal grants, all of which were for use in Conroy 's ward. When the votes were taken on these projects I don't recall Conroy saying, " free money is expensive All voters of Lower Township must realize that the mayor and deputy mayor are compelled to represent the entire township and therefore we must weigh each item before council on its overall benefits to each resident townshipwide and not in one individual Ward. CONTRARY TO CONROY'S assertion. I do not feel (and this is in no way meant to belittle Villas residents) that the center of our township is somehwere down Bayshore Road in the vicinity of Conroy "s Villas Lumber Company ("-Residents in other parts of the township deserve recreation. Let's be fair and consider aU residents. Conroy also stated that the project was • rammed down our throats", implying that it was suddenly "sprung" upon him without warning. In fact, the township has studied this project for over three years. It has been belore the council on numerous occasions. The specific Resolution that was passed was specifically placed before Conroy in February. Apparently he just doesn't pay attention to what goes on around him Yes. Robert Conroy. your nightmare for Lower . Township is what I envision as a park preserved forever for your children and mine, a park-all residents can take great pride in. in that it represents a pledge from all of us to save and not destroy what little open space we have left Yes. I envision many uses for this project. Beneficial uses to our residents, as well as the population at large. My nightmare is the day I drive down Sunset Boulevard and my view of the sunset is blocked by the towers of 2.000 condominium units, and I must go elsewhere to witness a sunset painted by the hand of God ROBERT R. FOTHERQILL Mayor. Township of Lower Conroy Eyeing Property? 'To The Editor: I see where Councilman Robert F. Conroy is opposed to Lower Towaship's acquiring the Dresser Industries property at Sunset Beach for preservation as a park. Isnjt it a fact that Conroy and a group of his friends tried to buy real estate near the magnesite plant a couple of years ago? Does Conroy have any future plans tdibuy the ground himself? He's already bought up half of the Villas, so why not Sunset Beach? We do not need a thousand high-rise condominiums at Sunset Beach. If that area is opened up for development, it will cost the taxpayers thousands of dollars Doesn't Councilman Conroy realize this? Doesn't he do his homework? ROBERT B. PARK Villas (ED NOTE: Park is president of the Lower Township Democrat Club. Conroy's running as a Republican for reelection)

They are the children of Mr. and Mrs. Morten Mortenson of Cape May. Conroy's Concerns In Wrong Places To The Editor: I find it a little hard to take when Councilman Robert F. Conroy says the acceptance of the Green Acres money will put a burden on the Lower Township taxpayers. He has made it quite clear that his real problem is that we might seek to put in an incinerator on the site. His problem with the incinerator is that it might conflict with the county MUA (Municipal Utilities Authority). He has stated repeatedly that he believes the county MUA can handle the problem of solid waste in this county HIS RUNNING MATE Phyllis M. Genovese. "made that exact statement at last Monday 's meeting. If Conroy were really concerned about the taxpayers of Lower Township he would stop supporting the county MUA. I defy Conroy to name another entity in this county that wastes taxpayers' dollars like the MUA. It has been a major boohdoggle since its inception. If has wasted millions and millions of taxpayers' dollars, but that doesn't seem to bother Conroy. I therefore find it hard to understand his sudden concern over our acceptance of the Green Acres money from the state. THE BOTTOM LINE is. Conroy is more concerned w ith the county MUA and with the county in general than he is with the township. He is the county's biggest defender on the council WhaThe should be concerned about is his constituents in the First Ward. If le can't put the welfare of the people in Lower Township ahead of the welfare of the county MUA then maybe he should forget about being a councilman in Lower Township and seek a position on the MUA. LONNIE MATT1A North Cape May (ED NOTE: Mattia. a Democratic County commit teewoman. is on the campaign committee for Republican Conroy's reelection opponent. Earl "Joe" Klinger) Genovese 'Doesn't Belong' To The Editor: I had to laugh at the recent statement made by Phyllis Genovese that the Incinerator Authority in Lower Township should be abolished Her reason for abolishing it was that. "The county MUA (Municipal Utilities Authority > will take care of the entire problem ." How can anybody with any sense make such a state ment? The county MUA has ripped off the taxpayers for millions and millions of dollars. If this is going to be Genovese's approach to all township problems, then she certainly doesn't belong on Township council. AGNES COYLE North Cape May (ED NOTE: Coyle is a Democratic county committeewoman; Genovese is Republican candidate for Lower Township's Third Ward Council Seat) What are Fire^Poliee? (From Page 58) to provide security and control at a- fire or emergency scene. Fire policemen are just as important as your volunteer firefighters The fire policeman is trained in traffic and crowd control to assist the fire department and emergency personnel in the protection of life and property So when you see such a person at an emergency, please cooperate. After all. he might help you sometime. LOU ROUX North Wildwood
