Mayor, Council Votes Tuesday

OCEAN CITY - Mayor Jack Bittner will be defending his seat against two challengers next Tuesday - unless Dean M Schoenewald pulls out of the race at the last minute. He was conducting a poll last week to find out if he's a strong enough candidate to beat Bittner or if he would merely serve as a spoiler in the three-way race that includes county MUA vice chairman Roy Gillian. Schoenewald. 25. of Westminster Lane, could not be reached for comment Monday on his poll or any decision to bail out of

the election. But the municipal clerk's "office said then that he hadn't indicated any intention of withdrawing. His name will still appear on the ballot in any case. Endorsed by the city Republican club. Bittner. 43. a motel owner from Sweetwater Court and former county freeholder, tops the ballot followed by Schoenewald. and Gillian who'd endorsed by police and firefighter unions CITY VOTERS ALSO head to the polls 7 a.m. until 8 p m to select three of five candidates for council member-at-large. < Polling , stations are listed on the top of sample ballots mailed to registered voters, » Henry S. Knight. 54. owner of Knight's Pharmacy, and Jeanne M. Clunn. 54. of Central Avenue, are standing for reelection. Also running for one of" the seats are former Council President Nickolas "Chick" Trofa Jr.. 59. a division manager for South Jersey Gas Co.; Gary Jessel. 35. of Asbury Avenue, and contractor Donald Niebuhr. 41. of Bayshore Construction. None of the candidates run on tickets in the nonpartisan elections here, but '"it's safe to say" that Clunn. Gillman and Trofa ' are on the same wavelength." Trofa observed Monday. The local Republican club is backing Knight. Trofa and Jessel AARP Meet CAPE MAY - Victorian Cape May Chapter 691, American Association of Retired Persons, will meet at the Victorian Towers 1 p.m. May 14. with a social hour at noon.
