Rte. 55 Extension Backed by Survey
MILLVILLE - Sen. James R. Hurley and Assemblyman Guy Muziani, both Republicans representing Cape May and Cumberland counties, have announced that a nearly yearlong survey supports the feasibility of extending Route 55 from its terminus here to Cape May City. "The survey, begun last July by the state Department of Transportation," Hurley reported April 29, "shows that there are more daily trips from Philadelphia to Cape May County than there are from Philadelphia to Atlantic County — more than 50 percent more, as a matter of fact." THE SAME study, conducted for east-west travelers, also showed that a triangle linking Cumberland, Salem and Gloucester 'counties, 4s well as a corridor from Cumberland County to Atlantic County, were as well traveled as the Camden County to Atlantic County and Atlantic County
I to Cape May County routes. S "This is all good news for r those of us in Cumberland t and Cape May County," ( Muziani Said, "since it shows that pur strengths as r traveler destinations have C increased at least as much \ as, if not more than, Atlan- I tic County, in spite of the £ lure of casino gaming." i FOR THE PERIOD in which the survey was taken, the average daily trips from Philadelphia to Cape May totaled 5,160, while those from i Philadelphia to Atlantic ' County totaled 3,300, 1,860 i under the Cape May tally. "We knew that Cape May County was a popular F destination." Hurley said, "but we never realized that it would rate so much t higher than Atlantic t County." 5 Those questioned merely 1 indicated their destination. » which means - that they » could have useff any route > to get to Cape May County. 5 The completion of a i southern extension of - Route 55, however, would f significantly reduce - the time needed to get from Philadelphia to Cape May. "WE FEEL that this study shows that even if it were necessary to build this portion of Route 55 from Millville to Cape May County as a toll road, it t would easily pay for i r itself," Muziani said. "The i improved safety of a j southern extension of Route 55 versus Route 47, i which is currently used, t would also be a major » consideration." 5 Hurley and Muziani i learned the results of the r survey during a meeting in Trenton with Assistant Commissioner of Trans pore tation James Crawford, n An information session on the survey has been y scheduled for 7:30 p.m. 6 Wednesday, May 14, in Millville City Hall
