Pet Patrol

The greatest deed you can do for your male dog or cat is to neuter him when he | reaches an appropriate age A neutered male pet. with the surgery performed early in his life, will be more affectionate. less volatile hormonally. will stray away from home less and enter into fewer fights. For some reason known only to psychoanalysts, women are more likely to neuter their male aminals than men. This fact probably boils down to the basic desire of some men to show their "macho" image with a big, strong, uncastrated dog.

HOWEVER, behaviorists unite in the belief that a male dog or cat is much more content and less defensive in a neutered state because instinctual response to male hormone release is reduced to the benefit of both animal and owner. The neutering (castration) surgery is less invasive than the spay oper^f* tion in the female. After achieving adequate unconsciousness by anesthetizing your pet. your veterinarian makes a small incision near or on the scrotum depending on the species

and removes the testicles through the incision. Vessels are tied off to reduce bleed- / ing. DOGS USUALLY will have a few sutures (stitches) in the skin which are removed at a later date. Ask your veterinarian when he would like the sutures removed. Cats generally will not have sutures after neutering and will heal quickly. As with a spayed female, normal activities with reduced exercise can be resumed very soon after the surgery. Since the surgery is less invasive than a spay, cost for neutering your dog or cat is usually less than spaying the same species. Larger dogs may carry a higher neutering fee because of elevated anesthesia and hospitalization costs, due to their size. A PROGRAM similar to the state-funded spay program is available to people truly in needs of assitance who have male dogs or cats to be altered. Contact your veterinarian concerning possible eligibility for this assistance program Intact male cats general ly fight and urinate in unwelcome places. Neutering male cats, usually at about nine months of age (ask your veterinarian), will cut down on your cat's picking fighLs with neighborhood colleagues. THE REDUCTION in male hormones through castration removes a male cat's need for establishing territory and finding fertile female cats. Less fights mean less injuries and fewer abscesses or cuts. Most fight victims need to be medically managed by your veterinarian. Obviously. neutering a male cat will save you money over time. Male dogs are neutered after puberty, also usually at about nine months of age Call your veterinarian for his preferred age of neutering. FOLLOWING the castration. your male dog will have less need for roaming and will not tear down doors to find the female in heat within the neighborhood Animal behavior experts Iind that male neutered dogs are not subject to emotional depression due to their condition In fact, most neutered males, especially

in the working breeds, are more eager to please follow - iCgcastration. r r"here may also be a decrease in unwanted aggression in dogs if neutering takes place at a relatively early age DOGS AND cats with only one (or no) testicle descended into the scrotum have the other testicle in the abdomen or just under the skin in the groin area. It is probably a good idea to have these dogs and cats castrated because they should not be bred and there is a risk of tumor formation in the entrapped testicle Responsible breeders will not use a one testicle (monorchidi dog for breeding purposes because this undesireable and sometimes dangerous trait can be passed on to,the offspring Entrapped testicles can sometimes develop into feminine horome secreting tumors. IT IS THOUGHT that the higher body temperature in the abdomen is conducive to faster than average growth in the testicle cells. Check with your veteri narian about the advisability of neutering your p£t which has no, or one testicle in the scrotum The decision to spay or neuter your pet rests on your shoulders. Though the cost may have to be budgeted for. the surgery is done only once in the life of a pet and the benefits of the investment are quite numer ous. Unless your pet is a registered and active show or field trial animal, spaying or neutering surely is a worthwhile suggestion. Note: New Jersey license fees for dogs are based on the neutering status of the animal. Owners of spayed or castrated animals will pay approximately $3.00 less for their annual dog license.
