Message from Adam Who Needs a New Baby?
By G A JjL MILGRAM Kff T.MAN Dear Mom : It's time we had another talk about recent developments at our house. I couldn't . help but notice that you've been putting on weight. I could be wrong, but it looks to be like you weigh more than Daddoo. The last time I observed this happening, it was to the woman who cares for me while you're at work; all of a sudden she was slimmer and a new baby came to live at her house. Now why would you want a new baby? I certainly don't. Think of the disadvantages! There won't be enough crayons and piaydoh to go around, for starters. From what I've seen of new babies they can't even make it to the pottie sometimes, like I do. HAVE YOU forgotten that new babies cry remarkably frequently, like to be held most of the time, and spit up a lot? You're always straightening up. so I know it's one of your hobbies. \dam Beitman You don't have to go to extremes to find more work. Remember just the other day when I turned a box of cereal over on the kitchen floor for you! Why, that was good for plenty of vacuuming, and I have lots of ideas along those lines! LET'S FACE facts, I'm a baby too. but what you might call an enhanced model. I can feed and undress myself, walk. talk, and even help with little things like loading the dryer with my toys, feeding the air conditioner milk, emptying the folded clothes from the laundry basket and making sand castles with the powdered laundry detergent. I even dismantled the heart machine at Dad's office. Now, could a newbaby do any of that? WHILE WE'RE talking. I have a few other bones to pick. The game is up — grandma tells me that my father's name is not "Daddoo." How was I to know1 At night when he's home ond you're writing at your computer you always say "Go see what Dad doing1" or "who left that there1 Now what did Dad do?" A word on baths. Look, people change — use yourself as an example
You claim I used to love taking baths. Not any more. I spend all day getting covered with magic marker and grime, then you come along and wipe it all off in a few minutes. I DON'T SEE what you find so amusing about bubble bath and shampoo either. No one's trying to stop you from bathing, just leave me out of it, OK? 4. Food is another subject that bears some discussion. Fm not opposed to eating, as you may think. I'm just particularly fond of peanut butter and jelly and do prefer it three meals a day. If the day comes when I yearn for chicken and vegetables you'll be the first to know. j FINALLY, we should talk about bedtime. Fine, you get me this nice big new bed. It wasn't necessary I'd just as soon sleep between you and Dad. By the time I drag 20 stuffed animals into my bed to ward off loneliness, there's no room even to roll over. Then, when I climb out of bed in the middle of the nij?ht and come to your room to make sure you two are all right, you get all bent out of shape and toss me back onto the crib! i Like . I said, you don't need to get a new baby. I would have stayed in the crib right along if you asked. MaybeTm too worked up over"vthis new baby business. But next time I have a birthday, would you consider asking me what I'd like for a present? Love, Adam (ED NOTE: Adam s birthday is tomorrow: the new baby was due yesterday, and Mom. of Marmora, is the wife of Dr Robert G Beitman )
