Crime Key to Slight Increase

Crime last year increased in Middle Township (590-775), Sea Isle City (254-357), Wildwood Crest (229-250), Woodbine (122-168), Avalon (161-220), Stone Harbor ( 183-215) and Dennis Township (70-100). Besides Ocean City and Wildwood, crime also decreased in Lower Township (789-747), North Wildwood (620-558) Cape May (271-254). West Wildwood (26-16), Upper Township (217-214) and West Cape May (44-41). Cape May Point reported 13"* offenses last year and in 1984. FOLLOWING ARE THE types and number of crimes reported in the county and each municipality last year ( A related chart plots their crime rates and crime indices over the past six years): Avalon — one murder, one robbery, one aggravated assault, 53 burglaries, 161 'larcenies and three motor vehicle thefts. Cape May — four robberies, eight aggravated assaults, 74 burglaries. 162 larcenies and six motor vehicle thefts. Cape May Point — one aggravated assault, nine burglaries and three larcenies. Dennis Township — one robbery, five aggravated assaults. 45 burglaries. 42 larcenies, seven motor vehicle thefts and one arsof* Lower Township — four rapes. 11 ag gravated assaults. 219 burglaries, 481 larcenies. 32 motor vehicle thefts and four arsons. Sexual assaults soared 150 percent, from 24-60. • Fifty -eight percent (23,709) of all domestic violence complaints resulted in injury. 12 percent above the 21,173 in 1984; 2.468 victims were seriously injured. Hands, fists and feet were the weapons used in 85 percent (22,987) of the cases involving weapons last year (27,086). • Guns were used in 393 domestic violence cases, a 31 percent hike over 301 cases in 1984. • Total domestic violence arrests last year (8,333) increased 24 percent over 1984. but arrests were made in only 20 percent of reported 1985 offenses statewide. • Up 44 percent over 1984 ( 4.213-6.079) were domestic violence complaints against offenders under court restraining orders following earlier crimes. • Sunday was the most frequent day for domestic violence last year. And. for the third consecutive year, most crimes (31 percent) were committed between 8 p.m and midnight • Alcohol and drugs were involved in 44 percent (17.945) of the reported offenses last vear, most of it alcohol ( 39 percent i . DOMESTIC VIOLENCE in Cape May Countv last year increased to 605 cases from 559 in 1984 and 363 in 1983. Of the 1985 total, one victim was killed. 441 assaulted (one sexually) and 136 harassed;. 24 were victims of criminal mischief, two of criminal restraint and another of false imprisonment. according to the UCR. As with other 1985 crimes (see related story). Wildwood led the county last year in domestic violence offenses with 192 to 184 in 1984 • The resort was followed by Middle and Lower Townships which posted increases from 72-105 and 77-89. respectively.
