A Do-It- Yourself Trash Plan Urged
AVALON - A do-it-yourself trash disposal plan is being considered by borough officials to alleviate problems which are especially severe during the summer tourist season. Councilman Charles Curtis said the council is working on ways to reduce the cost of trash collection and to maximize service to residents. "In the summer, we face a terrific problem with trash, especially on and immediately following the weekends," Curtis said. "WE RE LOOKING into the possibility of implementing a litter abatement pro gram this year that would enable residents tb dispose of trash in a dumpster at the public works yard^any day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.," he said. "This would1 certainly help eliminate the build-up of weekend trash and enhance the appearance of the borough," he added. Regularly scheduled
trash pickup for residents and businesses would remain the same if the program is approved. "Council is working with the county health department and our own department of public works to find answers to our trash problems," Councilman Richard Light said. "If this litter abatement program is implemented, all of Avalon will benefit." LIGHT SAID a borough employe would supervise activity at the dumpster and residents living near the yard would not be subject to odors of any kind or disturbed by noise. "All aspects of the program will be operated in strict accordance with the dictates of the county health department," he said. Residents will be notified if and when the program begins, Light said, and can help by not putting out their trash for pickup more than 24 hours in advance.
