, ACC Plans May 21 Social Science Fair
MAYS LANDING - Participating high schools compete in Atlantic Community College's Sixth Annual Social Science Fair May 21. The event features a variety of written and oral competitions and judging of individual and group projects in academic areas relating to social sciences. More than 900 students from 15 Atlantic and Cape May County high schools are expected to participate "The Model Press Conference," in which students play famous persons and field questions from professional reporters, has been one of the most popular events in past years. ANOTHER FAIR event is the "High School Bowl" which pits teams from each high school is a fast-paced oral quiz on social science topics. In the "Computer Software" event, students will write programs for the social sciences and run them on micro-computers in ACC's computer laboratory. Other competitions include: a "Library Race" in which students will vie in answering reference questions using ACC's learning resources center, a "Soap Box" category in which students can expound on a controversial topic; and written "Master Quizzes" on a variety of subjects. Students will also submit cartoons, essays and exhibits for judging.

Historic Beacon On Again NORTH WILD WOOD - The beacon at Historic Hereford Inlet Lighthouse has been relit in time for the summer boating season. The light has been darkened while work was underway restoring the lighthouse, which the city has had placed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Steve MacDonald, chairman of the lighthouse commission. explained that the light is tripped on automatically through the Cape May Coast Goard Base. It is programmed to go<fn at nightfall and go off at daybreak. "It's a beautiful, bright beacon and I feel will bring back memories to many people," MacDonald said. THE LIGHTHOUSE, at First and Central Avenues. Wildwood, is 112 years old. It first went on May 11, 1874, when a notice was issued to mariners that the light was in place. Prior to that time, since 1849, the site had been the location of a Life Saving Station. The property was listed among historic structures Sept. 20, 1977 THE BUILDING, when completely renovated, will house, among other things, a tourism information center and nautical 1 museum, MacDonald said. He pointed out, too, that the light is visible over a wide area not only over the mouth of Hereford Inlet and the Atlantic Ocean, but up and down the coast, with motorists traveling the Ocean Drive to home in on the beacon.
