Wetlands to Hold Turtle Day Fete

STONE HARBOR - Most people know what a pond turtle, a snapping turtle, or a diamondbaek terrapin look like. But what is a mock turtle? The Wetlands Institute's Turtle Day Celebration 4 p.m. Friday has brought several phone calls of disgust at the idea of serving mock turtle as the main course for a dinner designed toraise money for turtle conservation. In actuality, the mock turtle is chicken. Sponsors hope to show that traditional recipes that call for turtle meat can be equally delicious using chicken as a "mock" turtle, thus conserving the turtle population. DR. ROGER WOOD, one of the world's leading authorities on diamondback terrapins, will present an illustrated lecture following the dinner. Sculptured turtles by Tom McFarland of Waynesboro, PA., who has exhibited his craft at the 'omorrow fashion show noon tomorrow at the Golden Eagle Inn, Cape May. Hie fashions and entertainment will be by Moana Productions. Inc. Reservations are required. Tickets can be purchased from any Sea Lions member or by calling 368-1451. All proceeds will benefit the Helen Diller Home for Blind Children in Avalon. The Methodist Church Social Hall. Route 9 and Church Street, will host an antique show. 9 a.m. -5 p.m. while the house tour will run noon to 4 p.m. Tickets for the house tour , can be obtained by calling 465-4977, 465-3963, or 465-2707. The event is a benefit for the Cape May Court House Neighborhood Association, a group involved in environmental issues and historic preservation.
