SPORTS by SUE McKinley Weeks Pitches Panthers Into Tournament Position

Baseball and softball are moving right along as local teams slide into qualifying playoff positions. Early in the week, Lower Cape May made things tough for Middle Township by downing the Panthers 8-7. Denise Rutherford and Kirsten Flickenger sayed the Capers from a 8-7 defecit in the seventh Inning by finding their way home for two Lower runs to win the game. The 8-7 decision made it necessary for the Panthers to defeat Buena for a playoff birth. MIDDLE CUT IT close but a KM victory over Buena gave the Lady Panthers a .500 record, putting them in the state tournament. Middle connected for 12 hits against the Chiefs. Express Participates In Soccer-A-Thon

DEL HAVEN - The Cape Express Soccer Club members spent last weekend playing soccer for both themselves and for the other children not fortunate enough to be able to kick a ball. Saturday afternoon, the Express Locomotives and Engineers participated in the Second Annual BayRunners Soccer League March-Of-Dimes Soccer-A-Thon. Sunday it was back to requlation league play as the Midnight Special traveled to Willingboro only to be shutout 4-0. AT HOME in Del Haven. Ken Kirsch's Locomotives retained an 18 game no-loss streak (during regulation season (May) by waylaying Upper Township 1-0. This (seasonal rivalry has always produced a super game for the spectators; to date Upper has never left the field victorious. After many accurate team passes, Brian Daily headed the ball to Keith Kirsch, whose goal attempt was blocked by Upper's "tender" but not stopped.
