MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND is fast approaching. To many, the Memorial Day holiday marks the advent of the summer season. But it does have a deeper meaning — dedication to the memory of all who died "" in war for our country. • • • With everything open again, there are plenty of activities to suit your fancy. Look for Memorial Day ceremonies, fairs and antique shows this weekend. This is also a good time to enjoy the May flowers, especially the roses coming into bloom. * * * This fragrant time of year is also abundant with some of our favorite restaurants: I JACK'S PLACE. Popcorn shrimp, pita pizza and cheese fries are just for starters at Jack's Place, 3601 Ocean Drive in Avalon. Then move to the delectable pita and croissant sandwiches or gourmet burgers for a tasty treat in their newly redecorated dining room. And don't forget Jack's famous Friday haph py hour from 4:30 to 7 p.m. where you're sure to find old friends and meet lots of new ones as well. Ask about their fresh fruit smoothies and mocktails. ... LAYRE'S LIGHTHOUSE INN. Looking for a wonderful view and wonderful food? Then Layre's, overlooking the bay in%Villasf is

just the place. Now under new management, the menu is mouthwatering. Twilight dinners are served from 4 to 7 p.m. with 10 dinner specials. Layre's Lighthouse Inn is sure to make your evening special. » • * THE FILLING STATION. A favorite of both locals and visitors alike, it's hard to get a better deal than at The Filling Station, across from the Acme on Lafayette Street in Cape May. The salad bar is truly one of the best around. It's also hard to find better food at these prices. We recently had oysters that melted in our mouths and a seafood estapone like no other. Deserts include delicious Barricini ice cream but we opted for a fantastic strawberry cheese torte. And guess what — there's plenty of free parking! • * • CAPTAIN'S TABLE RESTAURANT. A towering shrimp cocktail will be just the beginning of a treat for both your eyes and your taste buds at the Captian's Table overlooking the ocean at Hollywood Avenue in Wildwood Crest.
