Stunt Kite Flying To Color Weekend
WILDWOOD - The city will host the East Coast Stunt Kite Championships on Memorial Day Weekend. This first-of-a-kind event draws national competitors from as far west as Hawaii and as far south as Florida. Being held May 24 and 25, it features individuals and teams of stunt kite flyers. A new and fast emerging sport, stunt kiting involves kites flown with two separate lines. The kites are guided through a series of intricate patterns and maneuvers. They fill the sky with color and motion, generating speeds up to 100 miles per hour. The kites are highly maneuverable and exhibit man-lifting capabilities. SOME KITES are flown in train (many kites strung together and flown as one kite). For exmaple, a "12 pack" featuifes 12 kites on a line. Some of the trains being flown may include up to 100 kites on a single line. These are more graceful, and exhibit long, flowing tails. Other kites are designed to be flown by teams of flyers, which go through crack precision maneuvers that are reminiscent of the Blue Angels type of routine. Some maneuvers include choreographed flying routines to music. This is a stunt aerial ballet. THE TWO-DAY competi tion is open to all levels of stunt flyers (novice and experienced) with the top competitors entering the
"open" class. There will also be kite workshops of fered to the kite flyers.
