Apparently Brian Setzer had the common sense to realize his rockability trio. The Stray Cats, had commercially and artistically gone as far as they could within their rigid framework. To some it must have seemed absurd when he pulled the plug on this band, but, as his stunning solo debut. The Knife Feels Like Justice (EMIAmerica), shows, it was a cunning and timely move. Setzer hasn't turned his back on roots music, as his tunes still flaunt bits and pieces of rockability.

rhythmn and blues, folk, country and vintage rock, but now it sounds sincere. His songs are sharper, the vocals warmer, and. unlike the entertaining but hardly essential Stray Cats, this isn't one dimensional. Setzer's solo career is off to a fine start, making his next effort something to look forward to. WHILE TALKING about "roots"' rockers. Austin, Texas, The Leroi Brothers have another fine effort. Lucky Lucky Me (Profile, 1775 Broadway. New York. N.Y. 10019), that should satisfy those who like an R/B/country tint to their rock and roll. As always. The Leroi Brothers play with plenty of gusto, the vocals are convincing. and the guitar i breaks are raw and exl citing. Fans of the I Fabulous Thunderbirds I and Nighthawks owe it to I themselves to give The I Leroi Brothers a spin. RHODE ISLAND'S Plan I 9 have added yet another I pscychedelic gem to its I growing discography. A'eep I Your Cool And Read The Rules (Enigma. P.O. Box 2428. El Segundo. CA 90245) is exciting progressive rock that recalls the best of 60 s psycheldelja. yet stands on its own because of the talent in the band. Plan 9's strength, as always, ies in its brutal, yet intricate guitar attack and dark, foreboding songs This hard working outfit has steadily improved since its debut of covers of obscure 60s rockers. Now plan 9 has reached the point of being one of the most refreshing and interesting groups performing today. Plan 9 is worth seeking out. AMERICAN GIRLS' debut on IRS is a rather lackluster affair. The melodies aren't very memorable, the arrange m e n I s are calculated, and the playing and singing are stilted. Not much is going on her. which is a shame, as advanced reports of The American Girls promised something a bit better than this.
