TRENTON - The burdensome provisions of the slate Fire Code's Retroactive Provisions have been eased somewhat, according to the state Chamber of Commerce Government Operations office. The retrofit provisions of the code, says the chamber unit, will be applied only to the following pre- 1977 types of facilities: ANY ENCLOSED shopping mall in excess of 12,000 square feet area; restaurants and night clubs with capacity of more than I 200 people; hospitals, day care centers, theaters, and amusement buildings, effective July 1. The Department of Community Affairs has appointed a "Select Technical Committee" to study revisions to the fire code. Businesses are advised to express their concern to both the Select Committee and the Fire Safety Commission during upcoming public hearings and public comments time. THE COSTS of retrofitting government buildings alone would be staggering.
