Though the mosquitoes are not yet threatening to I take over the county for the ; summer, those warm, humid, swarming days are coming soon. If you haven't had your dog tested for heart worms yet this summer, it is not too late to do so. r You should not delay this testing, however, because heartworm preventative 0 must be started as soon as possible. ,j Heartworms are spread . by mosquito bites. The ' more mosquitoes bite your dog, the more chance your 1 dog has of contracting ' heartworm disease. £ Mainland communities I naturally have a greater 1! mosquito population and ,'jl therefore more of a heartJ worm disease problem.

A MOSQUITO must bite a positive dog first to be infective. The mosquito picks up heartworm larvae during the bite, then after a short period of time the heartworm larvae lodge in the mosquito's salivary glands. Upon biting your dog the mosquito gets her blood meal and the heartworm larvae enter your dog's bloodstream. From the mosquito bite the larvae migrate toward the heart and lungs, passing through some mults in the process. Eventually, the larvae become adults in the chest. HERE THE heartworms mate, produce microfilaria (offspring or larvae) and your dog would then be considered heartwormpositive. When your positive dog is bitten by a mosquito, the cycle begins anew. Prevention is absolutely necessary in this area of the country. At present, heartworm preventative is given once a day, everyday, to heartworm negative dogs. THERE IS A once-a-month wormer being developed from the new drug Ivermectin (Merck), but is NOT available yet in this area. Your veterinarian will advise you when it does get legal clearance. Predicted approval for the Ivermectin preventative is probably late this year or 1987. The standard heartworm preventative, diethylcarbamazine, also abreviated DEC, is really another form of the anti-malarial drug used by people who travel to foreign countries. It stops the larvae ( microfilaria) from becoming adults in your dog's bloodstream when given evervSafety For Kids CAPE MAY - Tips for boating parents on keeping children safe have been issued by the U.S. Coast Guard here. Among these are: provide children with properly fitted personal flotation devices (life preservers); children should sit in the boat, never on the transom, gunwales, or bow; do not let children fend the boat off the dock with their hands or feet. For boating classes or further information, call 1-800-336-BOAT. Garden Party COLD SPRING - The Garden-By-The-Sea Club annual garden party, plant auction and installation of new officers will be held 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the home of Phyllis Genovese here.

day in the proper dosage. It is absolutely safe when used under the direction of your veterinarian. HEARTWORM preventative must NOT be giveRr*to- a heartworm positive dog. It is imperative that you take your dog to your veterinarian for a blood test before starting preventative if you haven't been giving it once a day throughout the winter and spring. The exception may be a very young dog ; check with your own veterinarian. The American Heartworm Society recommends that even dogs which are given heartworm preventative all year should still be tested in the early spring. THERE ARE very few signs of heartworm disease before it may be too late for your veterinarian to be able to save your canine friend. The adult heartworm in advanced stages of the disease will log the chambers of the heart and vessels associated with the lungs. i The larvae or microfilaria being produced by the adults migrate throughout the circulatory system and i can cause minute vessel ; blockages in small arteries i and veins. These are called i infractions. The organs ; serviced by these vessels which become blocked will ! suffer some damage, j IT IS FOR this reason that some heartworm -diseased dogs will demoni strate kidney or liver disease, digestive disorders 1 and chronic heart failure all at the same time. 1 Your veterinarian has an > extremely difficult time controlling the damage and enacting a cure in a dog ex- ; hibiting signs of advanced heartworm disease. This is why so much mention is made of preventing the disease from happening rather than trying to correct the damage after it occurs. Dogs with heartworm disease without clinical signs of heart failure can be treated. Methods of treatment will be summarized in my next article.
