County Library by Kathleen Dully

The word map usually conjures up the image of a highway or a street map. but the variety of different types of maps available is astounding. Mam atlases with specialized maps in various colors do not photocopy well, so the library supplies a complete set of historical and world maps in photocopyable form should you need them. Basically what I wish to do in this short piece is to introduce you to the variety of maps and atlases available at the Cape May County Library. The Atlas of the Biblical World ( R 220.91 R ) provides topographical (maps show ing the physical contours of the land) and political < maps show ing major cities, boundaries, etc.) maps covering from 2000 B.C. to A D. 100 — when the Bible was formed and written. EACH SECTION contains information on the historical. social, economic and religious background plus chapters which place the Biblical material in a proper setting. The Oxford Economic Atlas of the World (R330.9 O) relies almost entirely on topical maps showing the distribution patterns and spatial dispersion of a particular topic The maps show the dimensions and dispersion of: population: disease: educa tion; birth control; use of computers; telephones: tourism, chemical manufacturing or use; mineral assets; energy consumption or production: and innumerable other topics. 2 Honored At Lehigh . BETHLEHEM. PA - Two Cape May County residents were among 257 honored for academic accomplishments at the seventh annual Honors Convocation at Lehigh University April 27. ? THIS WOULD have been f an excellent source for the national newspapers and television staffs when they were trying to illustrate the numbers and placement of i nuclear power plants after the Chernobyl incident. I Besides mapping all our land surfaces, we have mapped the oceans and the seas The Rand McNally Atlas of the Ocean <R 551 !46 R) includes physical maps of the ocean floors, topical maps showing the average wave heights, currents, atmospheric pressure, distribution of minerals, migratory paths of ocean fish and wildlife and areas of pollution. IN ADDITION to mapp ing our planet's physical at tributes, political boundaries and any element you «pn dream up — we have alo mapped the heavens. Norton's Star Atlas: and Reference Hanmuoh (R 523.8 N> charts 9.000 stars, clusters, nebulae and 700 interesting celestial objects. The Atlas of the Universe ( R 523 M ) includes information. satelitte photographs and information gathered in space experiments of earth, our moon, the individual planets of our solar system and on into the universe. HISTORICAL atlases are often overlooked by the print-oriented individual, but each and every major period of history has at least one atlas devoted to it. There are atlases of ancient history, archeological sites the Revolutionary War. ihe Civil War. World Wars I and II and even individual battles The most spectacular one in the Cape May County Library's collection is The Official Military Atlas of the Civil War (R 911.73 U> THIS BOOK contains maps drawn during the war by engineers, draftsmen and sometimes even generals themselves for actual military use. Only a few maps, drawn later by cartographers. were added for historical purposes Tactical and stragegic maps indicate troop dispositions. Defense lines, redoubts. and fortifications by key sites are clearly show n Terrain maps often contain picket positions, signal stations. and lines of march SOME ARE rough sketches. some cartographic masterpieces. All are infor mative and reveal the know ledge — or lack of know ledge — that both sides possessed about the terrain, the strength of. and the position of the opposing troops There are detailed atlases

i of the world, the U.S.. the Americas, and Europe, which are pretty standard fare Our county library contains the Atlas of China with its detailed maps of the provinces and The Ord nance Survey Atlas of Great Britain t R 912.41 G ) with incredible, detail. WE ALSO HAVE in the collection a historical altas of Cape May County, naval charts and geological survey maps to round out the information on our local area

There are some unusual - specially atlases which I have saved till last - The Atlas of Treasure Maps which gives the supposed locations of buried and sunken treasure; The World Atlas of Wine (R <541.2 J) cover the world s wine grow ing areas and even individual vineyards of every country: and lastly The Atlas of Fantasy (R8U8 .801 P) which includes maps of fictional worlds such as Pooh's Hundred Acre Wood, the Sea of Dreams. Tolkien's Middle Earth or the Land of Oz.
