Early Deadline, holiday weekend, readers/contributors on vacation: its going to be a short column! A few weeks ago, I noted with sadness the passing of Lillian Fox Mayer, wife of * Wildwood s ex-park commissioner E.Z. Fox. In her memory, a tree was planted in Fox Park last week That's a touching gesture and most assuredly a fitting one. Those who participated are to be eomplimented for their thoughtfulness. The Little .League Field at Crocus and Atlantic is looking better than I can every remember. The board of directors and officers of the league have done a fine job of getting local businesses involved in the extensive upgrade of the facility. Donations were plentiful, time and material willingly offered, and in general cooperation was bountiful. The field looks great! Those businesses who contributed can now find their names emblazoned in blue on white signs and prominently hung from the outfield fence. Just like the major leagues! A FREQUENT contributor to local causes such as the Little League program is MAB Paints, located at Park and Rio Grande Boulevard. They do run their business right Last week. I was speak ing with Stan Mitchell from MAB Paints and he inform ed me that once again, the Wildwood MAB store was the leading store in the chain. Once again it's somewhat of an understatement, as the store has been tops in the country for 31 years! Now that's an enviable record Mitchell attributes the store's success to two areas. The first is a commitment to community involvement and the second reason is quite simply Jim Maguire. past manager and paint peddler of reknow. According to Mitchell. Maguire is a legend within the industry ana his name is enshrined among past ledger sheets in the Bruder Brothers s home office in Phiadelphia Maguire. now retired, lives with his family in Wildwood Crest and is a very active member of the Wiidwood Crest Ambulance Corps. ARMED WITH this information. the MAB organization should be ripe for solicitation as the tourism • powers that be attempt to bring new business into the Greater Wildwoods What better place to hold the annual fall manager/sales conference than in the town that has boasted "tops in paint" for three decades? Maybe we could even convince the ' Legend'' to come out of retirement for just one day to address the group. The First Methodist Church in Wildwood Crest is inviting one and all to their annual strawberry festival June 6 at the

church. 6700 Atlantic Ave., 6-9 p.m. It is an eat-in or take-out menu featuring strawberries over ice cream, and of course, strawberry shortcake. Plan to attend. IN COLUMNS past. I have mentioned the obvious shortage of employes for the restaurant and hotel industries. Acute is probably the best word for the situation. In response to the shortage. the Greater Wildwood Motel Association has organized and is offering classes to train owners and/or employes in the fine art of lifeguarding. This is a welcome bit of news for many. The classes are being offered at the Wiidwood Crest Ambulance Corps building and are open to all interested parties. It is a full course and will include the required CPR, Multimedia First Aid, and Water Safety at the Crest Pool. You may obtain further information by calling the association at 522-4546. Birthday Bests are to be extended to Darryl Groon. who recently celebrated his 8th birthday. Darryl is a second-grader at Philip Baker School in Wildwood Crest. Happy Birthday. Darryl! IT'S FUN FAIR time in North Wildwood Once again, the North Wildwood Home and School Association has organized a gala affair designed to offer the community a civic gathering and some good oldfashioned fun. The date for the grand Fun Fair, according to ! Bonnie Sloan. NWHSA president, is this Saturday. The location will be at the Margaret Mace School Playground and all islanders" are invited to attend. The Fair will begin mid-morning and continue throughout the afternoon THE KNIGHTS of Columbus Convention is behind us and all involved should be congratulated on a job well done. Coor- I dinating a large convention ] is no easy task and Marie Geiger and her staff at Convention Hall deserve a round of applause. I spoke with the hall the other day. and instead of sitting and basking in the success of a well planned convention, they were all quite busy making the last minute arrangements for the New Jersey State Order of Eastern Star Convention that convenes in the Wildwoods this week. j Sometimes it's hard to ' believe that the small staff is responsible for attracting and maintaining millions of business dollars within our resort communities. They do a remarkable job, and perhaps it is fitting to offer appreciation to the entire staff in the midst of a hectic convention season. Right now. they are all a bit i frazzled, but they should rest assured that their efforts are appreciated
