Elvis Costello has never been one afraid of taking chances as his career is dotted with controversy and musical experimentation. King Of America (Columbia) is yet another bold move for this mysterious singer-song-writer. Most of this stands in stark contrast to today's clinical and predictable top 40. There's a folk/country feel throughout with Costello's pain filled vocals having more in common with Hank Williams or Gram Parsons than his , contemporaries from Lhe I late 70s punk explosion. \ i King Of America is sure i to infuriate many of those i who want Costello to repeat 1 his past successes, but ' those who cherish a peri former who's trying to i create art before padding i his bank account will find I King Of America to be a 1 special album. - j MINK DEVILLE'S Spori tin' Life (Atlantic) is hardi ly the band's best effort, i but it is worthy of a listen, i especially if your're a fan > 1 of 60s soul. On ballads. WilI ' ly Deville is a mesmerizing " , vocalist, recalling Ben E. i King and The Drifters. Unfortunately. he's less convincing on the uptempo _ i tunes. Nevertheless. Spori Musical AtSJRT i l SOMERS POINT - A i musical. 110 in the Shade, by 1 Harvey Schmidt and Tom 1 Jones, opens Tuesday, June , 3 and runs through June 15 ! at South Jersey Regional l Theatre here. It's the final i production of the profesi sional theatre's 1985-86 sea- _ i son. Featured in the lead roles ] are Rich Hebert as "StarI ! buck" and Leilani Mickey i as "Lizzie". P.J. Barry dii rects the production. _ i Performances are 8 p.m. i Tuesday, Wednesday Thurs1 day, and Sun; 8:30 p.m. Sat- ' urday and Fri., and mati inees at 2 p.m. Sundays. Box rJ office is 653-0533.

tin' Life has more pluses than minuses. Still Warm (Gramavision, 260 W. Broadway. New York, N.Y. 10013) is the latest from jazz guitar hero John Scofield. What separates Scofield from most fusion guitarists is that he doesn't overplay. He plays with taste and feeling, instead of memorizing a lot of flashy solos designed to impress listeners with their complexity. Scofield is a rare gem. STEVE EARLE is another young singer-song-writer helping to break down the wall between rock and country. His debut, Guitar Town (MCA) is country in style, yet his rawness and confidence should win over a good share of rockers. Earle is the perfect link between the pure country of Willie Nelson and Way Ion Jennings and country-rock-ers such as Green On Red and The Long Ryders. Pass on Guitar Town and you'll be missing out on one of today's most promising composers. IN THE LATE 60s, Roky Erickson led Texas' most famous psychedelic band. The thirteenth Floor Elevators Since the demise of that legendary group, Erickson has struggled to get a solo career on track. It hasn't been easy, as some mighty fine records have been unfairly ignored. Hopefully, his new one, Don't Slander Me (Pink Dust/Enigma, P.O. Box 2428, El Segundo, CA. ) 90245), won't meet a f similar fate, as it's too good > to fail. - Don't Slander Me is gut- > sy, powerful rock and roll. I There are traces of I psychedelia, yet there are • also strong influences of blues and country. Erickson, always a distinc5 tive vocalist, is singing better than ever and the playf ing is highly energetic.
