Rx Health Watch — by Dr. Robert C Beitman

In our new series on headaches, today we will discuss the migraine. There are five classifications of migrain: classic, common, opthalmoplegic and hemiplegic, and basilar artery. Each creates a slightly different headache experience, requiring slightly different treatment. First attacks may occur any time between the ages of 5 and 30, but usually they begin during puberty. Initially boys and girls are effected in equal number, but in adulthood more women than men are affected. Women are more fortunate, in that many will find their migraines subside after menopause. IT IS A fact that some 70 percent of migraine patients have a family history of the disease. However, we don't know the exact genetic pattern by which the migraine trait is passed on. The medical literature describes a "migraine personality": people who are perfectionists, compulsive, meticulous, ambitious and often very intelligent. They also tend to be tense, vulnerable to frustration, prone to obsessions and sensitive. I have observed that many of my patients who come for treatment of migraine have a number of these characteristics; however, some do not. THE *• CLASSIC migraine" has three stages: the aura, the headache and the postheadache. During the aura, vision may become blurred and cloudy, flashes of light may cross the field of vision, as well as bright zig zag lines, sometimes of many colors. * There may be numbness or weakness on one side of the body, a passing period of forgetting words or thoughts, speech may thicken, or victims may experience vertigo. The actual headaches can be quite violent. Often they start on one side of the head and later spread to the other side. NAUSEA, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, vertigo, perspiration, chills, and the desire to stay away from light are often associated symptoms. The postheadache phase leaves most people feeling exhausted, although some THE SPINAL CURVATURE Our Knack for Bad Backs lis estimated that 8 out ol 10 Americans will have a back problem at sometime in their lives And no wonder we have a knack lor neglec ting our backs' "Weekend athletes" who strain underused musdes. people with poor posture, who lilt incorrectly, or who are overweight, under stress or out ol shape are setting the stage lor a back injury The musdes and joints that support their backs often lack strength and flexibility making it difficult to keep their backs in balance Dr. Bentta R. people feel uplifted and euphoric, usually the skull on the side of the attack feels tender and bending over, lifting or running makes the head throb painfully. In "Common Migraine" we usually find just the headache and its associated symptoms, not the aura effects "Opthaimoglegic and hemiplegic migraines" are more complicated: THE VISUAL disturbances of the former may last for days or weeks. The hemiplegic migraine often causes confusion, confusion of speech, and.... (hempiaresis or hemiplagia)... In this type these symptoms usually last less tfcin an hour and precede or accompany the headache. ''Basilar artery migraine" is quite nasty and includes vertigo, ringing in the ears, blurring of vision, unsteadiness, dizziness, stupor, vague sensations (often numbness), double vision, trouble speaking. This is usually found in females under 21. Next week we will discuss the trigger factors for migraines and begin our discussion of what causes migraine headaches.
