"Skimmer Weekend" dates back to the time following the 1962 storm that ravaged Sea Isle City, when business and civic leaders wanted to have some event to call attention to the resort's newly completed promenade and the general revitalization of the city after the storm damage had been repaired. The name "Skimmer Weekend" was selected as that was the time men traditionally put away their winter hats and donned a summer straw hat. or "skimmer".
