Muziani that would allow municipalities to increase appropriations to volunteer fire companies was approved May 15 by (he Assembly 75 to 0 The bill. A- 1676. is part of a package of bills designed to provide varied assistance to the state's firefighter and first aid organizations and increase the ranks of New Jersey's emergency service personnel . Muziani. R-Cape May. Cumberland, would authorize local governments to designate an addi tional $15,000 of their budget to volunteer fire companies, including increasing the annual cap to $60,000 ' VOl.t NTKEIt fire companies provide an invaluable service to our local communities." said Muziani. "We must ensure that adequate funds are available to upgrade equipment. materials and supplies " Muziani explained that currently, a municipality may appropriate $45,000 annually to volunteer fire companies. If the municipality has three or more fire commissioner boards or companies, an additional $15,000 may be appropriated to each additional fire company or district. Muziani s bill would increase these levels to $60,000 per municipality and in municipalities with three or more companies * an additional $20,000 maybe appropriated for each. Muziani noted that the ceiling for such contributions has not been increased in seven years. 1

Merc "Golden Hands" Bauman. and Pete K akoy a nnis-are all members of the Cape MayCity Volleyball Leagues. > Under -21 Penalty Backed COURT HOUSE - The Cape May County Council on Alcohol, pointing out the importance of keeping young people free of alcohol use, is lending its support to a bill introduced by U.S. Congressman James Howard which \yould implement a system of highway funding sanctions against states which do not enact a minimum drinking age of 21 Current law requires a 5 per cent reduction in federal highway funds for states not passing "21" legislation by October this year. The penalty would be increased to 10 percent for states which do not complyby October 1987 BEGINNING IN fiscal year 1989. funding levels could be restored to states without a "21" drinking age. Some states have passed laws that will lower the drinking age when sanctions expire. Others are waiting out the restriction. Passage of Howard's bill would make the 10 per cent penalty withholding per manent for any state not having a 21-year-old minimum drinking age.
