Ooris Ward ONE AT A TIME — This should be a familiar summer sight: a flagman directs traffic over the (ireat Channel Bridge between Middle Township and Stone Harbor. Bridge renovations were supposed to be completed, but traffic will be one-lane at various timmes all summer as contractor Raymond International of Texas continues "corrective action."

Achievement Fete For Students

VINELAND - The recent Cumberland County College Special Services/Talent Search reception opened with a buffet of stuffed turkey, rice and beans, chili and potato salad. But the main course was the awards ceremony, when scores of students are honored for their development and achievement. Special Services is a comprehensive counseling program that helps students experience academic and personal success, according to Director Maud FriedGoodnight. Students develop educational and life skills, increase cultural awareness and plan for careers. "ITS INSPIRING when an apprenensive person becomes a successful college student," Goodnight said at the reception. "Many of our students have progressed significantly during the academic year." Stephanie Hoffmaster of Tuckahoe was named outstanding Special Services student. She enrolled at CCC last September because "I wanted to become more marketable."

A 1971 Ocean City High School graduate, Hoffmaster attended the Philadelphia College of Bible for two years. At CCC, she carried overload schedules during fall and spring semesters so she was able to obtain an associate's degree in community service/social welfare. HOFFMASTER completed practicums at the

Vineland Developmental Center and the Rural Developmental Corporation in Port Norris. "Counselors continually encourage me to study and succeed," Hoffmaster said. "I've never been in an environment that was so supportive." Hoffmaster wants eventually to earn a bachelor's degree in -social work and pursue a career counseling women in crisis.
