Award- for Hurley For Transit Push

ATLANTIC CITY - At their annual convention here, members of the statewide County Transportation Association honored Sen. James R. Hurley, R-Cumberland, Cape May, for his initiative in calling for the establishment of NJ Transit bus routes to this city from points in Cumberland and Cape May counties. Hurley was presented wj^th an "Award of Merit" at the association's 10th annual New Jersey TransAction Conference by Henry Nicholson, the group's South Jersey vice chairman. "I AM PLEASED with [ the recognition shown me by the members of the County Transportation Association," Hurley said. "But I am even more pleased at how well these buses are doing and the service they provide for people in Cumberland and Cape May counties." The award pointed to the 103 route, which was initiated by NJ Transit at the request of Hurley and carries passengers back and forth between Cumberland County and Atlantic City. This route is the fastest growing in the state. " ALTHOUGH the 103 route is only two years old," Nicholson pointed out 5 at the conference, "it ' already has 28 round trips and carries an average of 1,400 passengers daily." In June 1985, NJ Transit ' increased the number of

daily round trips on this route from 16 to 21. Subsequent to that, demand led to the addition of three more with another four added recently. HURLEY WAS also instrumental in implementing Route 102, Nicholson said, which carries an average of 700 passengers daily between here and points in Cape May County. "I have been pleased with the popularity of these routes, which proved they are sorely needed," Hurley said.

Supports Transfer Tax Plan

COURT HOUSE - The county Chamber of Commerce board of directors and legislative affairs committee has endorsed Senate Bill 1897 sponsored by Sen. William Gormley and Assemblyman Anthony Villane to provide permanent funding for beach protection and flood control. The chamber had originally proposed a half cent a gallon gasoline tax. However, this idea did not receive wide support from North Jersey Legislators. A compromise proposal of a realty transfer tax increase has been widely endorsed throughout the state. ANOTHER BILL. S-1541 by Sen. Pallone, would still try to impose a tax on shore rentals of 1 percent, of 10

percent on beach fees collected by shore municipalities and 10 percent of membership fees collected by private beach clubs. The county chamber has opposed this legislation since early last year as being discriminatory. John Baldwin, director of the State Division of Taxation, testified in Trenton that a hotel/motel room tax would raise only about $3 million annually, a far cry from the $12-15 million needed each year to rebuild the beaches FOUR STATE legislators have opposed the realty transfer tax increase. They are: Sen. Francis McManimon, Mercer County; Sen. Dan Dalton, i Gloucester County; Sen.

Raymond Lesniak. Union County, and Sen. Walter Rand, Camden County. 0 Woodsy Owl uys No Noise Rotation Here! Give a hoot. Don't pollute. Forest Service, U.S.DA. ■
