In the Antiques Mailbox this week. Mrs. I.G. from Ocean View sent me a picture of her beautiful Flow Blue plate. The plate depicts two seated women, a small child and a cat. The underside of the plate says "Stafford Clews" and "Wilkie's Design." and the whole plate is richly glazed. This could be a very valuable plate, and is probably well over 150 years old. The Clews brothers (Ralph and James) made pottery in Cobridge, Staffordshire, England, from 1817 to 1835, and Flow Blue patterns were theirspecialty. THE CLEWS made their plates in series with names like Don Quixote, Three Tours of Dr. Syntax, and a
12-plate series called The Pictures of Sir David Wilkie. The only plate from the Wilkie series I could find with a book value was the Christmas Eve pattern and it listed at $365. From Avalon Ms. A.G.L. writes that she was recently given an aqua insulator cap embossed "Hemingray,!' and when she read in this column that some caps have a value upwards of $150, she wondered if hers might be one of them. Most insulator caps are nicer to look at than they are valuable. The most valuable of the almost 3,000 different types are the threadless variety made between 1850 and 1870. Each cap is usually embossed with a name and number, and the best way to find the book value is to do some research. Here are the prices of some Hemingray aqua caps which I found (CD stands for Consolidated Design, and often precedes the number): CD 121, $1, CD 122, $5; CD 196, $35; Cd 302, $20; Cd 102, $10. The most expensive Hemingray I saw was CD254, clear, $125. • • • MR. F.L. from Villas writes that he has lots of arms, legs, torsos and heads, and adds in paren-
theses" (pretty gruesome!)." What he is ; talking about is doll parts, and he wants to swap them with somebody who needs them to repair dolls for a whole doll that he can add to his collection. So, if you need doll parts, get in touch with me and I'll put you in touch with him. Speaking of dolls, I am stumped by a letter from C.S.H. of North Wildwood, who has a 25" doll the head and shoulders of which are china and marked "BD" underneath. If anyone knows what these initials might mean, please drop us a line so we can pass the information on. ♦ • • • Also, I'm putting a call out for T.D. of Wildwood, who would like to know something about a furniture maker named N. Snellenburg & Co. From North Cape May, M.B. writes that she has a 10" glass vase with "Orefors - 58-250 - W. ' Johanson" on the bottom, j and she would like to knowits age and value. Orefors was established in the Province of Smaaland in Sweden in 1916. It was known for high quality ornate art gtass, and the company is still in business today producing fine crystal and glassware. The numbers on this vase indicate that it is the 28th in a series of 250, making it a limited edition. Johanson was one of the early artists working with Orefors (others were Hald, Lund, and Lindstrand), so the piece is probably from the early part of this century. The color and shape of the vase was not described to me in the letter so I can't pinpoint it exactly. Other Johanson vases that I could find have book values of around $600. THANKS TO all who sent letters. Especially for your patience. I try to match up letters with my own research, so I don't answer them in any particular order. If I haven't answered your letter yet, I should get to it in the near future. In the meantime, try doing some research yourself over at the Middle Township Library. Try the generic books first (glass, ceramics, porcelain, etc.) to identify your piece, and then check the price guides for the value. Keep plugging — you'll really Tie gratified by ail the wonderful things you can learn along the way.
