Who Knows Where The Time Goes (Hannibal/Cathage, P.O. Box 667, Rocky Hill, N.J. 06553) is a magnificent fouralbum box set by the late Sandy Denny that nicely serves as a tribute as well as the definitive "best -of." Over the course of eight sides we're shown all facets of her short, but, artistically, bright career. Alongside her solo recordings, there are fine samples of her work with Fotheringay, The Strawbs, and, of course, Fairport Convention, all of which clearly show why she was often referred to as the Queen of British folk-rock. DENNY WAS an extremely talented individual. As a composer she leaned heavily on traditional British folk — especially in her melodies and lyrics. But, to most people it's as a singer that Denny will be best remembered. She possessed a clear, powerful, soaring voice, and it's nice to
have this material back in circulation. 4 While ardent Denny fans might nitpick about a song or two not being included, it would be impossible ft) find major flaws with this collection. Not only does it compile some of the best British folk-rock of the late 60s/early 70s, but it also features a number of previously unreleased studio and live cuts. ADD TO TH AT a booklet of photos and lyrics and it's easy to see why this box set has quickly become a favorite of mine. This project has often been talked about since Denny's tragic death, following a fall down a flight of stairs, in 1978, and many thought it would never be released Well, it was worth the wait and I wholeheartedly recommend it. Word recently leaked out that Hannibal is planning a similar tribute to another deceased British folksinger, Nick Drake. Although his American following was quite, small, this release promises to be as rewarding as Sandy Denny's Who Knows Where The Time Goes. I'll keep you posted. NEW JERSEY'S Queen of Folk Elaine Silver's Wandering Woman (Silver Stream,, 20 Wills Ave., Stanhope. N.J. 07874) is a nice blend of originals, covers, and traditional folk. Silver's engaging vocals and guitar, banjo, and dulcimer playing are nicely showcased on Wandering Woman. Even though she rarely plays in the southern part of the state, many readers should be familiar with Silver via the Uncle Floyd Show. This is a fine record by one of New Jersey's most gifted up-and-coming artists. Folk fans should not miss Elaine Silver. Lisa Rhodes is a fiery rock vocalist, but her album. Shivers (Spindletop. P.O. Box 1492, Houston, Texas 77241 ) is a bit of a disappointment. On each track Rhodes delivers a stirring performance, but the material and production aren't very distinctive. This is mainstream rock with a singer who deserves a lot better.
