Full Moon Brings Tardy Drum fish
The drumfish answered the question as to where they were and when they would arrive in Delaware Bay themselves. They arrived on the fulI«noon, and if history' repeats itself, they will be around for at least another month. The full moon will be late in June, and the drum should
bite at least through the full moon. Drum were added to the growing list of available fish for Jersey Cape anglers. So were porgies and kingfish. In the case of the kingfish, they arrived about two weeks ahead of last year's schedule. That's what makes
fishing so interesting. Fish have a way of surprising us. Abc*W"the time we figure them out, they change their pattern. KINGFISH ARE being caught from the Townsend's Inlet bridge to Eighth Street in Avalon, according to Hal Sprenger at Avalon Hodge Podge. Blues, sea bass, ling, tautog and a few porgies are the prime targets for the ocean anglers. Crabbing remains consistently good. Fluke, a scattering of weakfish and blues, plus some blackfish have helped improve back bay fishing. But the big news continues to be big weakfish. The numbers fluctuate from day to day, with some boats doing extremely well, others good to fair and some boats just so-so. Weakfish catches suffered a setback over the recent Memorial Day holiday weekend when schools of porpoises moved in Delaware to take the weeks * off their feed. Big numbers of boats contributed to the slowdown. SINCE THE weekend, however, weakfish catches have bounced back. Weakfish have been big, with many of the pool fish topping 15 lb. here are some of the reports: Capt. David Cicchetti of the Wildwood III out of Wildwood Crest reported nine weaks to 13 lb. and six blues for Joe and Mike Genovese. of Philadelphia. Day and night trips on the Fiesta have been productive. Day Skipper Jim Sullivan said weaks range from eight to 15 lb. Night skipper John Poppert said night action has been good near Brandywine. Fiesta fares boated over 9WH>. of weakfish last Sunday night. The boat sails at 8 a.m. and again at 7 p.m. Last Sunday's night trip had anglers catching up to five big weaks each as well as a lot of blues two to six pounds. Bob Brehm of West Chester, Pa. caught a 15 1/2-lb. weak to take the pool .and high hook honors with seven fish. MISS CHRIS fleet fares report good weakfish action on 6 and 8-hour bay trips John Dobson, of Fairhill, Pa., won the Penn 710Z reel with his 15.31 weakfish. The night boat is producing good weak catches. For boat sailing and charter information, call 884-5445 or 886-8164. Happy Days skipper Jim Solley reported a 350-lb. thresher shark for Dave. Rich, and Darrin Irwin of Mercellus, N.Y. The next day, the Irwins caught blues. Darrin, 9, caught a 12-lb. 2-oz weak. The Barracuda Fishing Club of Philadelphia, loaded up on sea bass, tog and some blues. George Zlotnick of Bridesbprg won the pool with a 10-lb. blue, call Capt. Solley at 886-7725. BLACK DRUM: Now that drum have finally moved into the bay. look for them in their usual hunts. Right now, the area around the Pin Top and north of Brandywine are the two hottest spots reported here. The Bug Light area should also start to take hold. Traditionally, drum should stay at least through the next full moon perhaps, longer. Last year the drum arrived late and stayed late, long after most anglers have quit fishing for them. The drumfish timed their arrival in Delaware Bay this year in time for the annual Lower Township Black Drum/Weakfish Derby. The derby runs through June 30 this year to allow tournament participants more time to fish for the drum and weakfish. ANGLERS WILL fish for a $250 first prize in the weakfish and Drum divisions. Winners also get a trophy. Four other prizes are being awarded in each division. Entry fee is $2 and anglers can enter any time until the tournament ends June 30. Weakfish continue to bite
in Delaware Bay. Some days produce more fish than others, but it is the size of the weakfish being caught that has surpri&d a lot of anglers. Fish in the 12 to 17 pound class are taking pools most days. It is quality fishing rather than quantity. Bluefish from two to eight pounds and growing number of fluke are being ^oaught along with the weaks. The best way to fish for the weaks is with a bucktail tipped with a plastic worm and a piece of squid or cut mackerel. The lure should be fished right on the bottom, where the weaks seem to be most of the time. This enhances the odds for catching fluke at the same time. HEAVY BOAT traffic and speeding outboards can put down fish. Weekend weakfish catches often drop off because the weekend outboarders churn up the water in their efforts to find fish. Weakfish read to excessive activity by quitting the area where they were located. If you see a> boat fishing an area and the anglers are catching fish, ease up to the scene of the action rather than to zoom in with the throttles wide open. Everyone will catch more fish if each approaches the weakfish schools more quietly. Crabbing has been reported as being the best it has been in years. A mild winter has contributed to the excellent supply of blueclaws. The run started early and indications point to an excellent season. The crabs are big as well as numerous.
