Construction Halt Delayed on Islands

SWAINTON - Delays on a few of the Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority projects will force the agency to go beyond its traditional deadline for a summer halt to construction activities on the islands, according to MUA Chairman William F.X. Band. '"We regret the inconvenience this may cause during the early part of June, " Band said. "But we felt that it was more important to complete these street paving projects in the three island communities affected by the delays than to

shut down now and leave the roadways in a rough condition for the duration of the summer . " TO AVOID ANY inconvenience to the large influx of visitors to the island communities during the summer months, the MUA has traditionally shut down its heavy construction activities in these communities from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Normal residential-type construction on the islands as well as projects under construction on the mainland are not, however, affected by the seasonal ban. The communities in which paving will continue for a short time beyond Memorial Day are Wildwood Crest, Sea Isle City and a portion of Avalon Boulevard in Middle Township, Band said. "Construction on the two wastewater treatment plants in the Crest Haven section of Middle Township and along the causeway into Wildwood will continue throughout the summer," Band said. I

Phone Choice Offered Telephone customers in three areas in Cape May County are being given the opportunity to choose a company that will provide their long distance service. Beginning May 26, ballots were sent to 1,700 customers in the Dennisville area; 4,000 in the Palermo area, and 900 in the Tuckahoe area. The new service, providing long distance service for calls outside the Atlantic Coastal Calling Area, will be available Aug. 31 as follows: in the 390 and 624 exchanges serving Palermo and parts of Upper Township; in the 861 exchange serving customers in Dennisville, Woodbine, and parts of Dennis, Upper, and Middle Townships; in the 628 exchange serving Corbin City and parts of Tuckahoe, Estell Manor City, and Upper Township. These customers will have the chance to choose a primary long distance company At no charge. Customers who do not choose a long distance company, after two opportunities to make a selection, will be allocated on a proportional basis to one of the companies participating in the allocation. Previously, customers not making a choice remained with AT&T Communications.
