Continuing our discussion of migraine headaches, it is important to look at what triggers them. Commonly, migraine suffers protest the suggestion that their headache was brought on by stress. J They'll tell you that they get the headaches at nonstressful times — on the weekend or vacations, not when they're at work. If they have problems at home, they'll say they handle them well and besides, the headaches come at work where they're very happy. BY NOW you've figured out that the migraine attack doesn't begin until the stress is over. This is a major factor in the diagnosis of migraine. Not all migraines are brought on by stress. There are certain foods that release chemicals which affect the blood flow system of susceptible people. Eating these foods can cause a migraine. This is not the same as an allergy. Allergy does not seem to play a role in migraine. EXAMPLES OF these foods include certain alcoholic beverages, chocolate, aged cheese, nuts, and large quantities of citrus juice. One of the simplest things to try in helping someone with migraines is to get a list of these trigger foods, and have them rigidly follow avoidance of these in the diet. •*» Studies have also shown that changes in hormone levels can trigger migraines. Many migraine sufferers will describe the onset of their headache during ovulation or just before menstruation. BLOOD SUGAR levels can also make a difference. Migraine susceptible individuals who oversleep or fast may awaken with migraines since they have allowed their blood sugar levels to plummet. Even certain medicines can bring on migraines, sometimes in people who have never had a migraine before. Estrogen, in particular. is known for this

when given to menopausal women or in oral birth control pills. NITROGLYCERIN, some of the drugs used to treat hypertension, and reserpine can cause migraine. Even one of the major drugs used to treat certain types of migraines, ergotamine, can create rebound headaches if the dosage gets too high. Although psychological factors can bring on migraine, the headache itself is very much a real physical phenomenon. Blood vessels inside the head and around the skull create the three phases of the attack. FIRST THE vessels constrict, leading to the aura symptoms, then they expand and are inflamed, creating the headache, and then there is the swelling and tenderness. Attempts at treating migraines are often unsuccessful, but are sometimes dramatically successful and definitely worth a try. Depending on how often your migraines happen, how long they last, and if you have other medical problems, your doctor will prescribe different medications, diets, and on occasion bio-feedback to help you.
