One of the nicest surprises of the year has to be the chart success of Texas blues-rockers The Fabulous Thunderbirds. I After years of non-stop I touring and releasing records that were ignored by radio, the band has Anally hit paydirt with Tuff Enough (CBS Associated). This is a knockout of a record. Jimmie Vaughan's guitar leads are to-the-point and consistently exciting and Kim Wilson's vocals give life to each song. Add to that a tight, steady rhythm section and production from Dave Edmunds that won't upset the blues purists but makes it easy to program the album on today's rock radio, and it's easy to see why, all of a sudden, The Fabulous Thunderbirds are hot. By the way, their previous albums are part of CBS' "nice price" budget line and are certainly worth picking up. ALSO FROM Texas and playing blues-rock is the very talented pianist/vocalist Marcia Ball. Her latest. Hot Tamale Baby (Rounder. 1 Camp St.. Cambridge, MA. 02140), is another strong collection of well chosen covers and spirited originals that make fine use of Ball's powerful vocals. Because of her adeptness at many styles of blues. Ball's album has more depth than much of the work of her contemporaries, giving her a distinct advantage. Check her out. When writing a Rounder, you may want to inquire about Alvin "Red" Tyler's Heritage . This New Orleans tenor saxophonist is fondly remembered by R&B collectors for backing some of the greats on the Imperial, Specialty, and Ace labels, but in his heart Tyler was foremost a jazz musician. This is a solid jazz record with Tyler's clear, melodic sax in fine form. To fusion fans this might seem a tad old fashioned, but, to my ears, this is what jazz is all about, musicians communicating with each other through their instruments. Bruce Horasby and The Range's debut, The Way It Is (RCA), shows promise but it ends up falling a bit short. This country-tinged mainstream rock band plays and sings well enough and a couple of tunes have chart potential, I but the sameness in the production and too many bland songs keep the group from attaining artistic success. Not bad, but when bands like The Long Ryders are I doing a much better job with this type of musical I approach why settle for • Bruce Hornsby and The Range? Apparently keyboardist Take Dad Out MARMORA — Marmora ■ Volunteer Fire Co. plans a special Fathers' Day Breakfast, 8-11:30 a.m. I Sunday at the Tuckahoe 1 Road firehouse; adults, $3.50, Children, $2.50.
Lyle Mays is on a leave of absence from The Pat Metheny Group, as he's touring on his own and he's just released his first solo album for Geffen Records. Those who want to hear some hot jazz might be disappointed in his solo debut, but those who approach it with an open mind should see the beauty in Mays' atmospheric compositions and revel in the tight ensemble playing. Mays' music is peaceful, but it's certainly not meant for background noise.
