I Aces' Training Camp Has Mixed Squad
WILDWOOD - Wildwood Aces coach Lefty Ervin greeted returning veterans Kevin Givens. I)aryl Lloyd and Stan Williams along with 15 others as the Aces opened training camp Sunday. Among those reporting were the Aces' top two draft choices. Jim Lampley and Cozrll McAces Open '86 Season In Florida WILDWOOD - Minus five players released in their first cut from the training camp roster, the Wildwood Aces of the United States Basketball League will open their season against the Tampb Bay Flash in Florida today. The club will travel across the state to West Palm Beach to take on the Gold Coast Stingrays tomorrow. The Aces will return for the home opener at Wildwood's Convention Hall Sunday. June 22. Former Villanova guard Stewart Granger was added to the roster last week, bringing it to 14. It had to be down to 10 by yesterday. Released in the first cut were: guards Ed Coe, Kevin Givens and Mark Halsel. forward Lester Pace, and center John Walker.

PA - Doreen Drexel. formerly of 65th Street, Avalon. has been on the coaching staff at Gettysburg College (Pa.) for only two years and already is regarded as one of the most successful young tutors in the Middle I Atlantic region. I Drexel took over Gettysburg's slumping women's volleyball and tennis teams and turned them both into Middle Atlantic Conference contenders and has been knocking on the national rankings door both years. OVER THE two-year period, her volleyball teams have posted a 40-19 record, going 31-11 this past season. She finished second to nationally ranked Juniata in 1984 and received a bid to the conference playoffs in 1985 She took a 3-8 tennis team from 1984 and turned it into a convincing winner the next two years, going 10-3 in 1985 and 11-3 this past spring. This season, her team won the Middle Atlantic Conference southwest crown, but lost the overall southern division title to F. and M. Drexel is a graduate of Middle Township High School, Court House, and a 1980 graduate of Frostburg State College. During the summer months, since 1979. she has served as tennis director in Avalon's recreation program Gymnastics CAPE MAY — A gymnastics program will be part of the summer recreation schedule. The classes will begin June 19 and be held every Thursday 5-7 p.m. at the Franklin Street Civic Center. The first hour will be for ages 5-7, with ages 8-14 years coming the second hour. USBL. NBA Players Association counsel Larry Fleisher ruled that Young has signed a contract for next season with the 76ers and is ineligible to play in another professional league. General Manager Rich Iannarella expressed disappointment in the loss, stating. '"If the parent club and the player agree that it would be beneficial for the player to compete in a structured league such as this, the NBA Players Association should not stand in the way of his development. We felt that Michael would make a tremendous contribution to our team and playing here would give him an edge in his quest to become an NBA regular." IN OTHER MOVES, the Aces have traded Kevin Springman. a starting forward on last year's squad, to the Staten Island Stallions in exchange for a high pick in next year's USBL draft. Three of the Aces draft choices - Jeff Hall. Dale Bianey and Ricky Wilson — will not be reporting to training camp as originally planned. Wilson was in Chicago for the NBA tryout camp and could not get to Wildwood in time for the
opening of Aces' camp, Bianey chose not to play this summer and Hall was married on May 30 and chose to devote the first week of training camp to his honeymoon. Former Villanova guard Stewart Granger is returning from the Phillipines and is expected to report soon. Pete's Set To Tackle CG Cutters CAPE MAY - In semifinal action in Coed Recreation Volleyball, Pete's Racquet Club swept by defending champion Rio Grande Building Materials 15-12, 15-2 and 15-9 in the upset of the year. The Racquet Club got to the semifinals by defeating Roth's Real Estate 8-19, 15-6 and 15-4 in quarterfinal action. They will meet the Coast Guard Cutters in the championship round the Coast Guard team defeated a tough Cape May Mobile Estates team 15-6, 15-10 11-15 and 17-15.
