From The Principal By Stanley Kolzen N Prim ipal. Lower < ape May Regional High *k hool

Paul SchmkHchen was here at the start, and he will be here again, 25 years later, to address the silver anniversary class of Lower Cape May Regional High at the Baccalaureate program 8 p.m. Sunday. For him it will be an opportunity to reflect on the plans and hopes that opened this school in 1961. For us it will be an opportunity to welcome back the man who brought regionalization to this area and supervised the building of a district that has educated more than 25,000 youngsters in 25 years. WE SAT IN this office and talked some last week, and it was the first time I had met the man whose picture hangs in our office and for whom our auditorium h^s been named. He is thinner now and tanned and his moustache is gone, but his intellect and enthusiasm are clear and retirement since 1972 has not dulled his pride in this school that he was so instrumental in creating. In a whimsical tone he reflects casually on the problems of regionalization and bond issues and money and boards of education. He talks of those hectic days in a manner that is so matter-of-fact that one is left with the impression that this man knew what he was doing all along and that Regional had picked the right man as its first superintendent.

IT WAS IN 1936 that Paul Schmidtchen earned a B. A from Rutgers University and after completing a Master's Degree in Education at Rutgers in 1938, he entered the education profession. Teaching jobs were scarce and during the depression it was not a promising or secure career that he began at Metuchen High School, where he also coached football. World War II intervened and he spent his military career in counterintelligence before returning to Metuchen as principal 1950-1958 while teaching in the night school program at Rutgers. Cape May provided him an opportunity to be superintendent that he accepted and he took over the responsibility for his brand new district in September 1958. THE FIRST ORDER of business was the matter of getting approval of a $1,400,000 bond issue to build a Junior-Senior High School. Working with the board of education president, Richard Teitelman, proponents met with civic groups and presented the case for the bond issue, which was approved in December. In rapid succession followed the approval of final construction plans in August and groundbreaking in November 1959. The staff was hired in April 1960 and moving day from Cape May High School was Dec. 22, 1960. Schmidtchen came here in 1958 to create Lower Cape May Regional High School and to participate in what he refers to as an "exciting, wonderful experience '. IT IS OUR job to see that his efforts in building this school district can continue to produce an "exciting, I wonderful experience" for I our students. It is a job that I we all share: parents, I teachers and I administrators. After 25 years it is com- I forting to know that the I man who was in charge I shows such faith in young I people and educators. We got off to a good start I here and the man responsi- I ble will share his views V with us Sunday night to commemorate the graduation of our silver anniversary class. s IMPERIAL SCHR^OE 4.99 *&" 9-Function Handyman1" Pocketknife w/scissors, Knives and can opener tv-m QUANTITIES LIMITED ST ALLOTS HARDWAIVC 135 E.
