Insurance Problems? Avalon Drops ' Risky \ Rec. Programs
AVALON - The borough recreation department has announced with "regrets'" that it will be dropping "high-risk activities" this summer because of "inability to acquire full liability insurance coverage." Recreation Director Dave Haberle said the borough, which usually has $4 million in liability coverage, so far has only been able to get $500,000. A quick check of several other municipalities did not find them cancelling summer recreation programs. Borough Business Ad- I minist rator Andrew J . Bednarek did not return this newspaper's phone calls. Haberle said these activities will not be held : • Roller skating, because "the hocky rink is not rebuilt." • A bike race, because "we are not set up for it. streetwise, and people kept backing out of their driveways." •Swimming lessons, formerly held in a donated, private pool, because the Red Cross has indicated its insurance may not cover the program, according to Haberle. • Surfing contest, which Haberle said he particularly regretted because last year was the first one. A new event is being
"substituted" for the bike race, Haberle said. It will be a tricycle race on the borough parking lot. V" Aft AF GRADUATE — Airman Donald W. Ilearon. son of Louis L.
