Middle Township

Students in Marjorie Parkhurst's fourth grade class at Elementary School 3 entered exhibits in the Ocean City Flower Show, held on the Music Pier during the weekend of June 6. Aaron Sill of Court House won first place for his entry of a Sweet Potato in the children under 14 years of age category. He also won a gift certificate to Rauhauser's Candies in Ocean City. Danny DeSimone of Rio Grande won first place for his entry of a terrarium. Jennifer Woodruff of Rio Grande and Kenneth Long of Court House won second and third places respectively for their terrariums. Jason Stewart of Rio Grande received honorable mention.

THE AMERICAN Legion Auxiliary Unit 198 held a picnic luncheon meeting at the County Park June 2. After the group finished lunch, they elected officers whose terms will begin in the fall. Lorraine Trueland of Court House was elected president ; Ann Flinn of the Villas, vice-president, Georgia na Da vies of Mayvilie, treasurer; Margaret Dougherty of Court House, secretary; Mary Rott of Court House, chaplain; and Helen Watts of Court House, new membership chairman. This was the organization's last meeting of the season. f LOIS LIKENS, the vocal music teacher at Elementary School 3, is currently portraying the mother, Ethel Banks, in the dinner theatre production of Neil Simon's comedy 'Barefoot In the Park'' at Wheaton Village in Millville. Likens' daughter and son-in-law, Bettie Ann and Joseph Candelora of Ocean City, are also in the play with Bettie Ann portraying Cory and Joseph playing Paul. Jerry Albert of Marmora portrays the character Victor in the play. The play will be performed two nights a week throughout June. For more information, call the Wheaton Village Dinner Theatre. 825-6800. We wish our friend John Phillips of Burleigh a belated ''Happy Birthday"! THE MIDDLE Township PTA sponsored an "End-of-the-Year Tea" for parents, guardians, and teachers at Elementary School 3 June 13. Tea and cake were served. It was a time for the PTA to thank the teachers for their efforts throughout the year.

It was also announced by outgoing PTA President Lorraine Mersch that the PTA gifts had been decided on a basis of a poll sent out to all members in May. Elementary School 1 will continue to receive aid in the renovation of playground equipment. Elementary School 3 will receive the funds to purchase board games. American Legion Auxiliary Unit 198 will sponsor a Casino Bus Trip to Resorts International in Atlantic City, leaving Jamesway in Court House 3 p.m. June 26. For reservations call 465-5579 or 465-5255. ELEMENTARY School 3 held its annual Olympic Day at Memorial Field in Court house May 23. Fourth and fifth grade students participated in the daylong activities. Nancy Roller's class won the Fourth Grade Championship with a score of 674 points. Marjorie Parkhurst's class came in second with 636 points. Agnes Maroszek's class was third with 612 points. Audrey Spaulding's class won the Fifth Grade Championship with 611 points. Jacqueline Stites' class came in second with 579 points. Linda Jones' class was third with 564 points. THE FOURTH Grade Relay Champions were the students in Janette Callaway's class. Parkhurst's class came in second and Maroszek's class was third. The students in Spaulding's class won the Fifth Grade Relay Championship. Jayne Ault's class came in second and Mary Gleason's class was third. Students in Maroszek's class won the Fourth Grade Tug-O-War Championship Nancy Roller's class was second. Jacque Ross' class was third. The Fifth Grade Tug-O-I War Champions were the students in Jones' class. Ault's class came in second while Stites' class was third. A DAY-LONG Jump Rope Competition was held, with the Grand Finale consisting of a contest in which students attempted to do as many jumps as possible in one minute. The fourth grade champion was Colleen Kosloski, with 196 jumps. Jenny Schofield came in second with 184 jumps. Jaime Adams was third with 170 jumps.

The fifth grade champion was Michelle Wilson. Chris Crawley and Mike McLaughlin were tied for second. However, a tie-breaker was held June 9 with Chris winning it. So Chris placed second among the fifth graders in jump rope and Mike was third. THERE WERE 736 award ribbons given out, according to Olympic Day's coordinator Norm Smith. First, second, and third prize ribbons were given out in every race and event. If a student finished first in a particular event, his or her team received 10 points; second, seven points; and third, five points. The Court House Kiwanis Club purchased the ribbons. The PTA ran the refreshment stand and provided the jump rope trophies and medals. Candy prizes were given out at the game booths. Thomas Bevis of Green Creek was re-elected as municipal leader and William Garrison Jr. of Court House as assistant leader of the Middle Township Republican Organization. Charles M. Leusner of Court House was re-elected as municipal leader of the Middle Township Democratic Organization. Ellen Lomax held an "Open House" in her classroom at the Middle School the evening of June 9. Parents, guardians, and students read poetry, saw dramatic presentations, and viewed geometric string art. Lomax teaches six, seventh, and eighth grade language arts in addition to six and seventh grade mathematics. THE EIGHTH graders at the Middle School took their annual class trip June 6. This year -it was a visit to New York City. The students toured the New York Experience, which depicts the History of New York They also took a walking tour of Rockefeller Center, the United Nations, and the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Intrepid, and ate dinner in Chinatown. The 110 students and 12 Middle School staff members who went on the trip had a marvelous time. We wish Betty Simpkins of Court House a very "Happy Birthday"!
