Flowering Shrubs Add Border Color
COURT HOUSE - Many of our favorite shrubs flower in the spring, but there are others that can provide color in the shrub border during the summer months, advises Larry Newbold, Cape May County Agricultural Agent. Mountain Laurel and rose bay rhododendron are two native broadleaf evergreens that are well suited to woodland gardens, producing pink flowers in June and glossy green foliage throughout the year. The maple-leaf viburnum is another shadetolerant shrub which has white flowers in June. BUMALDA SPIREA grows about two feet high and produces crimson flowers for several weeks in late June and July. Billiard spirea is taller and provides colorful rose flower spikes from late June to September,
White blooms of the mock oranges and Japanese tree lilia are other welcome additions to the June Shrub border. The St. Johns worts, or Hypericums, have showy yellow flowers in July and grow well in dry soil. Another shrub tolerating poor, dry soil is Leadplant, Amorpha, which adds interest to summer borders with blue flower spikes in July and gray foliage. OTHER J IM, Y - BLOOMING shrubs are the popular white Hills-of-Snow and Peegee hydrangeas and blue or pink florists' hydrangea, flowers of Glossy abelia and the fragrant white spikes of Summersweet, Clethra, add color in July and August For August and September Flowering, the colorful spikes of butterfly bush. Buddleia. and the fragrant lilac blooms of Vitex add interest until autumn foliage completes the season. Gardeners in southern New Jersey can also enjoy the bright red or pink crape-myrtle shrubs. These late-blooming shrubs may be pruned back severely before growth starts in the spring, since they flower on current season's growth.
Nostalgia Festival June 24 WILDWOOD - The city will host a "Golden Oldies" music festival 4-10 p.m. June 25. Honoring the country's golden era from 1920-1940, the featured entertainment includes: the Rag Time Variety band , the Sweet Adelines singers ; the American Legion Post 295 band; a Dixieland band, and, strolling entertainment including the Roaring 20's girls and jugglers. The free festival is the second in a series being held this summer on Pacific Avenue. According to mayor Victor Di Sylvester, "This particular event is a tribute to our senior citizens who grew up during a period that was at first gilded, as in the roaring 1920's, and then they experienced the trauma of depression in the 1930's. We want to bring back the good memories." The merchants on the avenue will also participate with sidewalk sales. The event is sponsored by the Wildwood Department of Tourism and its merchants. For more information, call the Tourism Department at 522-1407. J
