Lives Lived Out On Tidal Beaches
STONE HARBOR - When most peope swim in the ocean, they do not realize the abundance of organisms that live in the area between the beach and the open ocean. Dr. John McDermott will discuss these organisms in his illustrated lecture, "Life in the Intertidal Zone of Sandy Beaches", 8:15 . p.m. Saturday, at the Wetlands Institute. A PROFESSOR of biology at Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster Pa, Dr. McDermott has done research throughout the world on intertidal ecology, including Bermuda, Denmark, South Africa, and Eastern United States. He has done extensive research on Seven
Mile Beach, particularly along the beaches in Avalon. McDermott's lecture, which will include live specimens he plans to collect during the day. will investigate the food webs in the intertidal zone of exposed sandy beaches. THIS ECOSYSTEM is highly affected by the falling and rising tides, and he will discuss how animals have adapted to survive in this constantly changing environment. Saturday lectures are open to the public, free to Institute members. A $1 donation is requested for nonm embers. For further information, call 368-1211.

y Seat Belt 'Convinced Scheduled 1 SEA ISLE CITY - The 1 "Convincer", a machine designed to demonstrate the need for the use of seat belts while driving, will be available for public testing during the city's "Skimmer Weekend", June 21 and 22. The display unit is being made available by the New Jersey State Safety Council. The Safety Belt Convincer will be on the Promenade at Kennedy Boulevard during the Annual Flea Market Saturday and at the Public Saftey Building, 233 John F. Kennedy Blvd., on Sunday during the Skimmer weekend Auto Show. ! "THIS DISPLAY will vividly demonstrate the value of using seat belts," Commissioner Wm. VanArtsdalen stated, "as visitors will be able to participate in the demonstrations". "You can experience a controlled collision without injury in the Safety Belt Convincer. Sitting in a car seat, restrained by a lap belt/shoulder harness, you ride down an incline to a sudden stop. The impact you feel at only 8 to 10 mph helps you imagine what would happen to unrestrained motor-vehicle occupants crashing at greater speeds," VanArtsdalen explained. "The Convincer proves to people, safely, the urgent need to wear seat belts while driving," Commissioner ' VanArtsdalen stated.
