At Least We Got Shoes ( Atlantic ) is the latest from New Jersey's own Southside Johnny & The Jukes and it's one hot album. As can be expected the music is vibrant R&B flavored rock with punchy horn arrangements and gutsy singing from leader John Lyon. The material is consistently strong, with the high point probably being their soulful rendition of The Left Banke's 60 s pop masterpiece "Walk Away Renee". The last few Southside Johnny & The Jukes albums have been a bit spotty, but this hasn't any major flaws Girls Like Me (Capitol) is a fine comeback effort for Tanya Tucker. After a string of shallow, directionless albums. Tucker has come up with a longplayer that makes fine use of her sultry, country-pop voice. For the most part her choice of material is praiseworthy and her performances are sharp and confident. This is Tucker's strongest record in years, giving her career a much needed boost. NOW THAT The Kinks have left the Arista label for MCA. their former lable has issued an impressive two-record collection. Come Dancing. The Best of The Kinks 1977-1986. These four sides are full

of witty, melodic pop games that keenly point out why The Kinks are one of a handful or mid-60's British invasion bands still making meaningful music. There's some great rock and roll on this album. Guitarist Pat Metheny is one of jazz's brightest stars. His fluid playing and melodic compositions stand out when compared to the blandness of today's fusion scene, but even he usually sticks to a safe, working formula. WELL. NO MORE, as even his harshest critics have to applaud his recent collaboration with alto saxophonist/violinist Ornelte Coleman. Song X (Geffen) is a daring release that allows Metheny to venture into the more avant-grade regions of jazz. Coleman's playing and compositions seem to encourage Metheny to stretch out and take some chances, which he does without falling flat on his face. The interplay between these two bandleaders is inspired, making hope there'll be more joint projects between Metheny and Coleman. I'M SURE many of Metheny's fans will be confused and angry with Song X. but, if they would give this a chance, they would ultimately see it as the landmark release it is. Seasoned jazz buffs will immediately appreciate its greatness. Boston has always produced a healthy rock scene and Barrence Whitfield & the Savages' second album. Dig Yourself < Rounder, 1 Camp St. Cambridge. MA. 02140) is yet another prime example Combining R&B. rockabilily. and 60 s garage rock. The Savages are raw and wild and it's easy to see why they're a popular club attraction.
