From The Principal IBy Stanley Kotzen Principal, lower ( apr May Regional High School
The most significant diploma award we made at the graduation of the class of '86 was to a young woman who did not hear a word of the ceremony and did not step forward to shake the hand of the presi dent or our board of education. Donna Ackroyd was attentive and very proud, but she has been deaf from birth and being or: thopedically handicapped, she had to be wheeled forward. where she was recognized by a standing ovation. It is at moments such as these that public education stands tallest when it has accomplished the education of a very special youngster who has learned to succeed in spite of multiple handicaps DONNA ACKROYD'S story is one of enormous family sacrifice that culminated this week in the completion of her senior year atLpwer Cape May RegionaTTjigb' School as a member o0our Silver Anniversary class. This was the first year since fourth grade that Donna attended any school and her success here was the product of an effective support system and the tolal cooperation of home and school In the spring of 1985 the process began with a meeting between Donna s parents, Kathleen and Thomas of Townbank < both graduates of Cape May High School), and Becky Matthews of the Lower Cape May Regional Child Study Team. TOGETHER THEY decided to provide Donna with the opportunity to be a part of the school that had graduated her sister and brother (Paula '81 and Thomas '84). This would be her senior year and her eagerness was the determining factor that moved her education from the confines of the home to the hallways of a regional high school. There were enormous questions that had to be answered about Donna's schedule and transportation and physical and educational support during her school day THERE WERE questions about wheter she could handle the environment of 1.100 people and the dynamic nature of life in the building. Looking back, those doubts now seem to have been an exercise in futility. Donna's enthusiasm for school and her indomitable nature made those adult anxieties purely academic. According to her. through here signing tutor Paula Curliss. it was a wonderful year. Ms. Curliss had much to do with the success by providing the support of familiarity and confidence that developed during the past three years of tutoring in the home. In addition. Donna had Micheline Mastracchio. who also signs as a mathmatics teacher, and a group of friends who willingly helped her through these hallways in her chair. THE REAL VALUE of "IBIS year for "Donna wafsln ' •
the many friends she made. As a bright young woman who is an avid reader she was able to share that special warmth that she has with so manypeople who never knew that she existed. Becky Matthews knew and Paula Curliss, and the Ackroyds. and now we have been able to discover that sever physical limitations cannot destroy the spirit. The real value of this year for us was in getting to know Donna Ackroyd. who is "a real delight". We salute her family. We applaud her effort. We wish her well.
