MUA Gets $211,822 State Grant Help
SWAINTON - The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority learned at its regular meeting last week that it had been awarded more than $200,000 in state supplemental grant funds. In a personal letter to MUA executive Director George Marinakis, Gov. Thomas H. Kean informed the authority of a total of $211,822 in state awards. The grant awards are for various phases of planning, design and construction of the Authority's regional wastewater treatment facilities. "AS CITIZENS of New
Jersey," Kean wrote, "we face a difficult and challenging task in cleaning up our water, especially in light of recent federal budget cuts in this area." He said that this task of cleaning up the environment now lies directly on the shoulders of local officials and the citizens they represent. "I want you to know that I appreciate your efforts in this regard, and I ask you to share my thanks with those who worked with you on these projects," Kean wrote. "IT IS MY hope that our commitment to clean water,
coupled with creative approaches to meeting our goals, will result in a better environment for all of us in New Jersey." The four supplemental wastewater grants represent 8 percent of the eligible project costs as defined at the time the original federal grants were awarded. THE AMOUNT of the grants and the projects for which they were awarded are: - $6,040, for design work on the sludge composting facility; - $145,774, for the original facilities planning, including preliminary engineering.
for the regional wastewater treatment system; - $7,650, for design work on the Cape May Region 1 wastewater treatment plant; and - $52,358, FOR the construction of the Ocean City Region wastewater treatment plant. "We are pleased to be able to report the receipt of these grants from the state," Marinakis told the CMCMUA commissioners. "This represents another block of funding that we can use to help keep down the costs of wastewater treatment for the users of the system."
