) Bill Lowers Age For Summer Jobs

TRENTON - The Assembly Labor Committee June 12 released legislation that would allow seasonal amusement or recreational businesses to hire workers as young as 15 years old when school is not in session. The measure, A-2706. which was released with a vote of 6 to 1, was jointly sponsored by Assemblymen Guy Muziani and Joseph Chinnici. both R-Cape May and Cumberland. The lawmakers explained the term "seasonal amusement" refers to any recreational or amusement business which operates for seven months or less. AT MUZIANI S request, the committee amended the bill to include the provision the minor could not work if his job involved the operation of mechanical equipment. Present law permits minors 16 years or older to operate mechanical devises. Muziani explained the minor also has to obtain an employment certificate from his school during the first 14 days of work in order to continue working. "Currently, state law allows only minors working in food, restaurant and retail establishments, who are at least 16 years of age

or older, to secure a job in this fashion," Chinnici said. "BY LOWERING the minimum age and granting a 14-day waiver to seasonal amusement and recreational businesses, this bill would give businesses more flexibility to cope with the decline in the number of 15- to 18-year-olds available for work in the industry," Maziani said.
