Sea Isle City — ' Rich e
Turtlemania has hit Sea Isle City. It ail started with the School Kids Poster Contest; then the turtle signs. Next, the Adopt a "turtle Campaign with adoption certificate, etc. The Daily Paper (whose name we don't mention) conducted an interview with environmental commission member Shirley Burns, who initiated most of the aforementioned programs. Last week, Channel 40 called and wanted to interview me about turtles. They were promptly steered to Shirley, or turtle expert. Last Wednesday, the ultimate Don Polec and his Channel 6 cameras came to town to do a bit on turtles. I saw the cameramen shooting turtle signs and City Hall. They were calling all over town trying to round up a few turtles. As of this writing, the turtles have not yet made the 11 o'clock news, but I fully expect they will. I guess that makes Sea Isle City the Turtle Capital of the World. Maybe we can become as famous as Pux atawney. Pa. with its groundhog I wonder what turtles can predict??? BETTY STRANGE, the secretary to the principal at Ocean City High, graciously sent me the list of Sea Isle students who won awards and scholarships at graduation And an imposing list it is — Maggie Quinn has a list all by herself. Maggie won the Civic Club award for Literature, the Award for Mathematics. Beryl Gleason Memorial Award for Guidance. Army Reserve Scholar — Athlete award. Garden State Distinguished Scholars Certificate, Ocean City High Alumni School Spirit award. Sea Isle City Milton Bingham award, and the Ann Brinkman Memorial award. In addition, Maggie was salutatorian. OTHER WINNERS: Thomas D'Intino. the Wally Johnson Memorial award, the Ocean City Exchange club and the Ocean City Board of Realtors awards; Christine Pacifico and Dave Costantino. Business Education awards; Susan Town. Drama Club award in memory of Nathan Heche; Robert Korkenberger, the George Meyer American History award; Daniel Swankowski, the Italian American Club of Sea Isle City scholarship; and Matthew Schroyer, Ocean City Rotary club. Ocean City Education Assn. and the Omega Lambda Psi Sorority awards. Stacy Spiegel won the award as the outstanding business student. Our heartiest congratulations to all the award winners and to all the Graduates! NOW TO THE postgraduates — Judy Martinez-Perrine has joined the Princeton Junction office of Fox and Lazo. Judy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray llottinger of Townsends Inlet. And Frank Gelz of Sea Isle has real cause to be proud. He has a brother. Rev. Joseph Getz, and a sister. Sister Eleanor Cecelia, who are each celebrating their 35th
anniversary in religious life. The Recreation Department schedule goes into full swing this week. Aerobics started Monday morning. They are held Mon., Wed. and Fri. from 9 to 10 on the beach at Kennedy Blvd. The Tot Spot opened on Mon. also. This is a program for the 2 to 6-year-olds. If you Moms have something to do, like shopping, tennis or just relaxing, bring the youngsters to , Dealy Field on Mon. Wed. and Fri. from 11 to 12. Jeannie Gibson has an interesting program planned for them. The first Family Fun Day will be this Saturday at 10 a.m. at Kennedy Boulevard and the Beach. Bring the family and join the fun! Chip Steelman reports 48 participated in the Jessee Owens Games and 28 are going on to the regionals in Philadelphia July 12. Last i signup day for all the leagues — T-Ball, Baseball, Girls, Boys and Men Basketball, will be June 27 in the Beach Tag Office. If any business in town has not been conI tacted to sponsor a team and wishes to do so, it may contact me and I will have > a Recreation staff member contact it ► PRIOR TO the last commission meeting, Charley i Town. Sea Isle liaison, and Joanne Oxley. Burdette Tomlin Community I Representative, presented I a program outlining ' facilities available at the : hospital and expressed a ? desire to cooperate with the » various communities. ' 1 have a suggestion for t the hospital and the recrea- » tion department. Why not : start a "Wellness" i 1 program? \ ; The hospital could have personnel on hand to take blood pressures, hand out information on proper 1 nutrition, etc. There could be an organized exercise i program three days a s week, medically j supervised. i PERHAPS. IN the fall, . the hospital could sponsor a ^ i diet program for the whole town like that in Nashville. ; I hope Charley Town and i Joanne Oxley and other I hospital officials can get n together with Chip e Steelman and the recrea- - tion commission and y develop a program. y Heaven knows, Some of US e need it. j. • • • I Anyone want a turtle cole oring book? Anyone want i- 1,000 of them? Plenty of \ i- them available in Beach e Tag office for the asking. II And discount tickets available for Great Adventure, Sesame Place, etc. Contact Recreation y Department. i- • • • n Sea Isle Historical »• Museum opens Saturday.
