The latest rock "supergroup" to emerge on the scene is GTR, which is fronted by two legendary guitarists, Steve Hackett (formerly of Genesis) and Steve Howe (formerly of Tomorrow /Yes/Asia ) . Knowing this talented duo were teaming up, their Arista debut promised great things, but, unfortunately, not all were delivered. On the positive side Hackett and Howe sound great together. Both are melodic guitarists, who blend classical and rock sounds to create some delightful instrumental passages. HEARING THEM I together is a real treat. I With that in mind, it's I tough to admit the I drawbacks outweigh the I strong points. Most of GTR's material I is bland stadium rock, I over-rehearsed to the point I of sounding as faceless as Styx. Maybe GTR's album would have benefited from the group's doing a tour prior to recording, and, if that's the case, their second album should live up to their potential. FORMER LEAD singer of the pop-punk Undertones, Feargal Sharkey's solo debut on A&M is a Message Contest OCEAN CITY - A North Carolina couple, looking at the damage to their property after Hurrican Gloria, found a bottle on their front lawn. That bottle turned out to be one of those cast into the ocean by participants in Ocean City's "Message in a Bottle Contest" last year. This year's contest, part of the Second Annual July Jubilee, will be held 1 p.m. Monday, June 30, in front of the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. PRIZES WILL be awarded for the first bottle found, the one travelling the farthest by Aug. l, and the best decorated bottle. A treasure hunt, featuring prizes donated by local businesses, will follow the contest. The event will be free to children. For more information contact the Public Realtions Department at 399-6111. Treasure Hunt In Ocean City OCEAN CITY - Poking 1 and peeking in search of I hidden treasure, parI ticipants in the July Jubilee 1 treasure hunt will converge i on downtown Ocean City 1 p.m. July 2. The event will be held at the 34th Street business area, starting at Palombo's Pharmacy, and is free to children. For more information contact the Public Relations Department, Ocean City, at 399-6111.
spotty affair. A few tracks stand out as potential singles, but his quivering vocals grow tiresome after only a few spins and the production is rather lame, i sounding like any run-of-the-mill British hitmaker. The novelty of Sharkey's I voice isn't enough to sus- ( tain interest. Fans of quality guitar playing have a lot to be 1 happy with these days. Roy Buchanan's Dancing On The Edge (Alligator, P.O. Box 60234, Chicago, II. 60660) is great. DRAWING FROM the blues and country, yet giving his music a solid rock beat, Buchanan's playing is electrifying. He's a tasteful guitarist who knows when not to overplay. It's easy to see why so many of today's stars rank Buchanan as one of the best on his instrument. An added treat is guest vocalist Delbert McClinton on three tracks. When is some enterprising label going to give this Texas R&B singer a contract to sign? Albert Lee's new album. Speechless (MCA) is more county than rock, but considering his many rock sessions, it's prime crossover material. His relaxed, fluid style won't knock you over the head, but it will win over listeners with its subtlety. Lee is a true master, and, while these tunes aren't I likely to race up the charts, | Speechless deserves to be I heard by anyone who has I ever picked up the guitar. I This is what the instrument was meant to sound like. FINALLY, there's Stand Up (Elektra) by the Steve Morse Band. Morse is one I of a handful of young rock guitarists not worried about the latest fad. His only goal is to make quality music, which he does with plenty of style. The former guitarist for the Dregs fluctuates between flashy riffs and simple phrases, knowing when and when not to play. The few vocals are solid, yet they never detract from Morse's guitar playing. This is his second solo outing and it's obvious Morse is more than comfortable leading his own band.
