One Bad Ocean Reading Passes Second Test
By GREGG LAWSON CREST HAVEN - For the First time this season, the county Health Department's recreational water monitoring program has recorded an unsatisfactory reading of fecal coliform bacteria in ocean waters. The area, at Schellenger and Ocean Avenues in Wildwood, tested at 240
MPN (Most Probable Number) on June 16. The state ocean water quality standard is SO MPN. The county Health Department requires two consective readings of 200 MPN or above to close , bathing beaches. A retest of the area on June 18 showed a reading i of less than 2 MPN. After i an investigation, the
Health Department couldn't trace the source of the high count. "WE COULDN'T FIND anything at all," said Public Health Coordinator Louis J. La manna. "We just can't explain why we got that high count." In the back bays, the highest count in samples taken June 16 to 18 was at Snow's Fish Docks in Cold
Spring, 2,400 MPN, the highest county measurable. The state standard in back bays is 200 MPN. Lamanna said fish docks in that area are traditional problem spots, with wildlife, runoff and illegal sewage discharges from boats contributing. All those areas have been posted for the summer, he said. "THAT'S IN THE AREA of the clam processing factory," Lamanna said. "Who's to say some of that (waste) is not getting away?" High counts were again recorded in the Stone Harbor Manor area, which Lamanna said is the result of leachate from subservice sewage disposal systems. The lagoon in Stone Harbor Manor and the creek mouth by the Lumber company both recorded counts of 920 MPN June 17. A special survey taken in the Stone Harbor Manor area recorded counts between 5 and 1,600 MPN. "They're all part of the (Stone Harbor Manor) area," Lamanna said. "You can see where, with counts like that, we're not going to open those areas. "THOSE AREAS are posted, and if this summer follows the same trend as last summer, it will remain posted," he added. "We're getting a lot of leachate through the bulkheads from septic systems." In the North Wildwood back bay. Beach Creek (north of Beach Creek Bridge) had a high corn/ of 240 MPN on June IT. A retest June 19 showed an acceptable count of 49 MPN. "That area there is not known to be used as a swimming area," Lamanna said, adding that it was posted. Also in North Wildwood, the Health Department conducted a special survey as part of its marina monitoring program. Counts in the inlet junction and the mouth and bend of Old Turtle Thoroughfare showed samples ranging from 2 to 49 MPN. IN THE COX HALL CREEK area of Lower Township, a traditional problem area, Fern Road had a high sample of 350 MPN and Wildwood Avenue had a count of 240 MPN. A special survey of points north of Cox Hall showed counts ranging from 22 to Arbor Road in Lower, to 540 off Maryland Avenue in Lower. Eldrige Avenue in Middle Township had a sample of 240 MPN. "It could be a combination of things," Lamanna said of the high readings. "Partially, it could be the (Cox Hall Creek) outfall lines and all the horshoe crabs littering the beaches, which attract a lot of seagulls." All the areas were posted last week, he added. THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT last week posted three areas on the Tuckahoe River that had fecal counts of between 240 and 540 MPN, in the vicinity of Marshallville Road and two points west of Marshallville. "These areas are still posted and we will increase our surveillance and testing of the river," Lamanna said. "We'll be
doing additional water sampling and increasing our range of sampling areas, and will be doing a sanitary survey. "We've requested assistance from the Atlantic County Health Department for their side of the river to see if any sewage discharges are coming from there," he added. Lamanna said a river survey a few years ago didn't come up with any sources of pollution and the Health Department concluded it was from runoff from farming operations. •THERE MAY POSSIBLY be some contamination from leachate from sub-serface disposal near the river," Lamanna said. "There have been some reports from residents about haulers dumping there, but we haven't been able to find any evidence."
