Home Health Agency: Help, Companionship
I By GREGG LAWSON CREST HAVEN - Mary Fisher turns 100 in
September and wants to stay at Sunshine Farm, where she has lived since 1924. Despite recently being stricken with blindness, Fisher, like many elderly people, wants to remain where her roots are, and not in a nursing home. Although two relatives have moved in to help her on a daily basis, she still requires some medical services, which she receives from the county Health Department's Home Health Agency. EVERY OTHER WEEK, or when needed, Fisher is visited by Susan Seabrook of Court House, one of seven registered nurses employed by the department to provide medical care for the elderly. According to the county Planning Board, 20.3 percent of the county's yearround population is 65 or older. Seabrook and her colleagues make an estimated 6,000 visits a year, performing such tasks as taking blood pressure, giving medication, irrigating catheters, applying dressings for wounds and educating patients about their particular health problem. "WE GET REFERRALS, either from the family, a doctor or a hospital, for someone ill in a home and send a nurse
out to make an evaluation visit," said Suzanne Towey, director of community nursing. "If the person needs skilled nursing, we open a case and get a physician's orders "We also offer physical, occupational and speech therapy." she added. What Towey didn't mention is that they also provide companionship. "THESE PEOPLE enjoy the visit; they look foward to you coming and appreciate what you do for them, no matter how little," Seabrook said. "Some people have no family nearby, or never had children. So, the public health care people are their family." "This girl is one of my good friends," Fisher said of Seabrook . ' 'The work she does, she does kindly and sympathetically. "I look forward to her visits," she added. "I try to keep in mind when she's coming." "I think it's wonderful, it's done wonders for me," said Regina Hennigh, 86, of Cape May, who has had severe heart problems in recent years. "Her checking me every week means a lot; it puts my mind at ease. "Without this program, I would have to go to a doctor (Page 12 Please)
