Rx ~ Health Watch — by Dr Robert C Beit man

Headaches are often associated with high blood pressure ( hyper-tension > . These are usually nagging and throbbing, usually starting in the morning and then easing up afer awakening and standing up. With very high blood pressure some people will have episodes of blurred vision. confusion, and drowsiness. Hypertensives will sometimes develop headaches during orgasm. These may be extremely severe and followed by sweating, palpitations, anxiety, nausea, and vomiting. VOL MAY HAVE heard of TIA's. "transient ischemic attacks." also known as "warning strokes." In 44 percent of cases these will be accompanied by headaches that are pressurelike, rather than throbbing and usually last only a few minutes during or just after the TIA.

Many people who get headaches during TIA's also have similar headaches between attacks. Hemmorrhaging in the brain creates a particularly intense headache. Most often it is created by an "aneurysm' (swelling in the wall of an artery of the brain due to weakness in its structure > . If the aneurysm grows it may begin to cause pressure symptoms. JUST RECENTLY I saw a 35-year-old male who gave a history of having been healthy ail his life and then suddenly developed an excruciating bursting headache after playing basketball. The pain spread to his neck, back and legs and lasted for several days. He also complained it was painful to move his eyes and that light bothered him. Fearing an aneurysm abou to burst. I hospitalized him immediately, his workup proved the diagnosis and he is now recouperating from successful brain surgery. Had he waited longer to seek help, the story might not have such a happy ending. ALTHOUGH there are many more types of headaches than we have covered in the last several weeks, most of the rest are very highly technical and complex in nature to explain. We should not end without mentioning what so many actually fear when they come in for diagnosis: brain tumors. Twenty percent of persons with brain tumors will find headaches as their first symptom, although 90 percent will eventually experience headaches. THIS IS usually an occasional. deep, aching, nagging and pressurelike headache. Straining in effort or coughing may make it worse. In the beginning the headach occurs only in the morning. Later on it can become quite severe, reach a peak and then disappear a few minutes later, until it starts up again. With slow growing tumors the only symptom might be recurrent headaches for many months or years. Part of a good headache workup is performing the tests necessary to rule out brain tumors. Health Watch is a public education project of the Cape May County Unit of the American Cancer Society, of which Dr. Beitman is president.
