Pequals piano. The piano, with its wide range of sound and versatility, has gained an unrivaled hold on Western music. The library contains materials on a wide spectrum of materials that relate to this popular instrument. There are books on the history of the piano, the nature of music, information on great piano makers and pianists, sheet music, how-to play the piano information, and step-by-step instructions for tuning and repairing. TWO EXCELLENT survey books are The Book of the Piano, edited by Dominic gill (786.209 B) and The Piano; Its Story from Zither to Grand, by David S. Grover. The Book of the Piano is a comprehensive, wellillustrated study of the piano from its earliest forerunners, the clavichord and harpsichord, to the concert grand of today, written by a team of musicologists. The book not only chronicles the physical development of the instrument but discusses at length the nature of the music written for it and the rise of the virtuoso performer. THE AUTHORS have explored the role of the piano in the evolution of different styles from classical through jazz and popular music. The Piano ; It's Story; from Zither to Grand studies the piano through its musical and social environments. Written by a piano manufacturer, the discussion of the piano's technical development excels. If you have a piano around that was purchased for the youngsters' musical education and they no longer play it — don't sell it. Learn to play yourself. Two recommended titles in this area are How to Play Piano by Roger Evans, which is serious and written for the absolute amateur, or How To Play The Piano Despite Years of Lessons (786.304) by Ward Cornell and Fred Marx which irreverently helps you to harmonize, make accompaniments, simple variations, countermelodies and just fool around for personal enjoyment. This is more of ■ a guide for creative exploration than a course. Three Hundred Years of the Keyboard; a Piano Sourcebook from Bach to the Moderns by Patricia Fa Hows -Hammond (786.404 F) provides essential information on the major composers for the piano, including their styles, works and editions into contemporary trends.
A unique feature is the inclusion of a single musical example for each composer which enables the flavor and style of that composer to be savored. SHEET MUSIC is available for Broadway tunes. Tin Pan Alley hits, piano standards, country and western favorites, rock and roll and its many variations, waltzes and of course, classical selections. The Home Library is a series of 12 volumes of sheet music divided by theme or decade of popularity. There are books on famous pianists and on types of piano music such as The Great Jazz Pianists; Speaking of Thier Lives and Music by Len Lyon (786.46
L) Essentially in two parts, this book surveys jazz pianists from 1900 to today placing them in the context of the overall history of jazz and its changing instrumental style. The second portion is devoted to a series of interviews of the great jazz pianists. For those interested in the technical aspects of the piano, we recommend two titles: Piano Servicing, Tuning and Rebuilding; for the Professional, the Student. Hobbyists by Arthur A. Reblitz (786.23) or A Complete Course in Professional Piano Tuning, Repair and Rebuilding by Floyd A. Stevens.
