In my 15 years of Greater Wildwood area residency (no, I'm not a native but my boys ARE), I have seen i a lot of notables come and go. Perhaps more go than come, but I have never seen a more meaningful | and sincere send-off than the series of testimonials to Bob and Sue Peterson. Really! I know that this is the fourth time that I have mentioned the Petersons in this column, but just when I think the "hoopla" is over, somebody comes along and tops the previous festivity. This latest one is a gala tribute, to say the least. LAST WEEK, a "We're going to miss you" party was hosted by Freddie Mahana and the 2Sth Street Merchants Association. Thousands attended to wish the Petersons a fond farewell. THOUSANDS! That's incredible for a community that doesn't even get half that many people out to vote in elections. It took nine huge sheet cakes to offer the written message of "Best Wishes". Entertainment on the Boardwalk was courtesy of the increasingly popu'ar Hoffnagle Band. North Wildwood Mayor Lew Vinci attended the ceremony and offered his praise of the Petersons. By mayoral decree, henceforth and forever more, May 23 will be celebrated as Bob Peterson Day in North Wildwood.^ For you Margaret Mace' students who happen to read this column, that does not mean, however, that school won't be in session on Bob Peterson Day. AT THE celebration, everybody wanted the Peterson's new address in California. So many in fact, that an alternative had to be found to transmit the info to the interested parties. It was suggested that an excellent vehicle would be the "Wildwoods" column in t h e Herald /Lantern /Dispatch, so here it is: Robert and Susan Peterson, c/o 6331 Marcella Way, Buena Park. CAL 90620 End of Peterson platitudes, and again I wish them well. DRIVING THROUGH North Wildwood the other night. I noticed an extremely attractive, multi-
colored, hot air balloon rising above a portion of the city. The device was well lit and was absolutely beautiful. Naturally, I zig zagged my way through the streets in an attempt to locate the source of the illumination. Lo and behold, it was attached to the roof of the Bent Elbow Cafe, formerly Garvin's Irishman's Cafe. It is an excellent promotion and it certainly brightens up that section of New York Avenue. Take a drive by ; it really is an attractive item. I WAS TALKING with Walt Kauffman, one of Five Mile Beach's finest motel maintenance wizards, and he related to me a story of heroic proportions. It seems that North Wildwood builder Ed Roach was on a fishing trip miles out at sea when one of his fishing companions was felled by a massive heart attack. As is the usual procedure in these cases, the Coast Guard was called to air-lift the stricken man from the boat to an emergency medical facility. Problems occurred with the initially dispatched helicopter and a second request was necessary. With time ticking by. Roach continued to perform the necessary CPR heart massage that kept the gentleman alive. With the arrival of the seDecorated Bike Test, Parade WILDWOOD - A "Best Dressed" bike Contest and parade will be staged here Friday. Aug. 29, with prizes for the winning entries. Bikes can be decorated with balloons, crepe paper, streamers, lights, flowers, or anything else participants can whip up. Riders can also be dressed in costumes. Registration will take place in Fox Park 1 p.m. The event is sponsored by the City of Wildwood and the city bicycle businesses. For further information, call the Wildwood Tourism Department, 522-1407. Master's For Osborn WILDWOOD CREST - Donna Marie Osborn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Osborn of Louisville Avenue, has received her Master's degree from Marshall University, West Virginia, in the field of emotional disturbances, with a certificate in dealing with learning disabilities. Osborn earlier received her bachelor's degree at Marshall with a double major in elementary education and specialization in mental retardation.
cond helicopter, the man was whisked away to the National Guard Armory in Crest Haven, where he was met by MEDIC 9. A brief trip to Burdette ensued, and the gentleman was stabilized. It is a story with an upbeat ending. Stories like this instill in one a faith in the system. Our local medical/rescue services are unequalled, and even with the best of services, it takes a man of Roach's caliber to save the day. Mr. Roach, my hat's off to you. You are indeed to be complimented. • • • i TOOK MY annual sojourn on the Boardwalk last week. The famous wooden way looks great. The new rides, remodeled stores, and pristine condition of the Boardwalk is certainly something to brag about. Our most famous attraction is without equal. This week as the lasses 13 to 20 who are members of the Rainbow Girls convene in the Wildwoods, most assuredly they will be treated to a good time along the boarded bonanza. It is an attraction that will hopefully keep this 600 room convention in the Wildwoods for many years to come. SPEAKING OF Conventions of Masonic origin, Marie Geiger, director of Convention Hall, has informed me that the Demolays are considering the Wildwoods as a site for one of their miniconventions. That's good news. The Demolays are members of a Masonicsponsored organization and an excellent group of young men to attract into the Wildwoods. Could the Wildwoods be returning to the Masonic Convention Capital of New Jersey? One would think so with
the Grand Lodge, Tall Cedars, Eastern Star, Rainbow Girls, and Demolays all finding their way to our'lwspitable sandy shores. The largest convention, the Mid-Atlantic Shrine, still convenes elsewhere, but with the trend drifting back to the positive... just maybe! • • • IN THE "things to do" area, I was asked to notify one and all that on July 7, 8, & 9, St. Simeon's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church will be holding its annual Christmas in July bazaar and flea market at the church grounds. Dinner is available the night of the 7th and a luncheon will be offered during the afternoon of the 8th. This is always an enjoyable bazaar. St. Simeon's is at the terminus of Pacific Avenue where Central Avenue meets 28th Street. From my pet item list, the HELP WANTED sign at Burger King has mysteriously changed again. Now it reads "H&LP WNTD J53/HR." Come on Jeff, order some new letters! IN CASE YOU haven't heard yet, the Wildwood Aces have been reactivated and they are once again playing basketball at Convention Hall. Call 729-9000 and they will afford you the season's schedule and the times of the home games. Also at Convention Hall is Monday night wrestling at its South Jersey finest a la Maurice Catarcio. Again, call Convention Hall for the particulars. Upcoming in August, the 21st to be exact, is the 76th Annual Greater Wildwood Baby Parade. I'll remind you again of this one, as it is seven weeks away. Have a happy and SAFE 4th of July!
