Happy Fourth of July! Guess the town will be rocking this weekend. I know it will be rocking on Friday evening. There will be a Rock 'n Roll Concert on the Promenade to get the festivities of the holiday off to a rousing start. Naturally there will be the usual fireworks on the beach Saturday evening. Hope everyone has a safe and sane holiday. Interviewed Police Chief Carl Gansert to see if he foresees any unusual problems because of the large crowd expected. The chief expressed a real concern about the illegal use of fireworks. He reported there were five fires and two injuries last year because of careless use of rioisemakers. / GANSERT SAYS the on/ly legal items in this state are caps used in cap / pistols. The chief further \ reported anyone caught transporting fireworks into or within New Jersey can be fined up to $10,000 and imprisoned for one year. Gansert also says anyone illegally discharging fireworks is liable to a fine of $100 for each offense. The entire police force win be on the alert for violators to insure the safety of the citizens and visitors. GANSERT WAS "under the gun" at the last commission meeting. Several citizens voiced their objections about noise, abusive language and disorderly conduct in general on weekend nights, particularly when the bars close. The chief promised more patrols on the street starting this week, since the summer police are now in uniform. The commisWhy Do Fish Keep On Move? STONE HARBOR - What makes fish and other estuarine animals move about? The answer, or answers, may be provided by research this summer by Dr. W.W. Reynolds, Wetlands Institute executive director. The project will focus on distributional ecology, orientation behavior and movement patterns to determine the effect of salinity, water temperatures, dissolved oxygen, and light intensity. Dr. Reynolds has published more than 100 scientific papers and book chapters on research on this and related fields.
sioners stated they would contact tavern owners to seek their cooperation in trying to alleviate the problem. REMEMBER. I told you of Beach Tag Director Don McDermott's incentive plan for inspectors. So far, the following eating establishments have offered free meals : Nickelby's; Buono's; Carmen's; Dutch Corner; Garrity's; Lucci's, Ocean Drive; Phil's Pizza; Canal 42; Yum Yum; Martinelli's; La rides Market; Marie's Beachside and Van's. And the industrious inspectors are taking advantage of the generosity of the merchants. Top salesman for first weekend with over $1,100 was Tom Quintois and he was overwhelmed with his Dinner for Two at Carmen's. Tom also won for the next week and was rewarded with Breakfast at Nickelby's. Second weekend winner was John Delfini and he and his date had a complete dinner at Ocean Drive. How about a few more of the restaurants contributing free meal support to these outstanding beach inspectors? • • * Patrick Lynch, son of , Dennis and Phyllis Lynch of 47th Place, is home on leave.
