Navigation, Erosion Aid Voted
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The House Appropriations Committee has approved funding for eight navigation and beach erosion control projects, including three in Cape May County, sponsored by Congressman Bill Hughes (D-NJ). Hughes said all of the projects are designed to protect and enhance the coastal resources in South Jersey, which are the key to the region's multi-billion dollar tourism, fishing, , shipping and boating industries. Cape May Inlet to Lower Township: The bill recommends $913,000 to complete the advanced engineering and design and begin construction of a navigation and beach erosion control project in Cape May. which is intended to restore the badly eroded beaches in Cape May City and help protect the nearby U.S. Coast Guard Training Center. COLD SPRING Inlet: The bill includes $122,000 for maintenance dredging along this waterway, which serves the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center. This funding had been requested by the Administration.
New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway: The committee approved $100,000 for the Army Corps to survey a 2,000-foot stretch of the ICW in the vicinity of Cape May Harbor. This sectioi> of the waterway may need to be deepened to accommodate the larger commercial fishing vessels coming on line in Cape MayCounty as part of the effort to catch and market underutilized species.
