Hughes Again Hits Saltwater License
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Bill Hughes (D-NJ) has once again expressed his strong opposition to the administration's proposed saltwater fishing license. In testimony before the House Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee. Hughes said the proposed $10 federal saltwater fishing license is nothing more than a new tax in disguise, which the administration wants to impose selectively on recreational fishermen. He urged the committee to help defeat the saltwater fishing license plan, which the administration propo671 ed earlier this year. A "LET THERE be no ■ mistake, recreational I fishermen who fish in A marine waters already pay r| their fair share of taxes J and fees to the federal ■ government," said H Hughes, who represents A New Jersey's largest R coastal district. "This inJ eludes a 10 percent federal I excise tax on most of their H tackle, a three percent tax A on certain fishing equipR ment, and the nine cents J per gallon federal tax on m motorboat fuel. H "At the same time, the A administration is also askR ing Congress to enact J legislation to impose a A Coast Guard 'user fee', rj which would be assessed A against many of the same R people asked to pay for the J new Fishing license," he A continued. "The adminisr] tration's saltwater license A fee is simply another tax on R an already overtaxed J group of people who are A asking for nothing from the r\ federal government other J than to be left alone so they ■ can go fishing." \ Hughes pointed out that ■ the saltwater fishing
license proposal could have a damaging impact on New Jersey, where recreational fishing is a major element of the state's multi-billion dollar tourism industry.
